<p>The Girl Without A Sound was born out of defiance and as a response to the fairy tales wewere told as little girls. Stories about white princesses with blue eyes, flowing locks of hair and anoverwhelming awareness of their beauty. But more than that, it was written as a healing balm formyself. For the part of me that winces every time black female bodies are dismissed or violated in awhite, patriarchal and racist reality.As an act of restoring power and agency to young black girls in South Africa, this is a story about a voiceless girl of colour in search of a sound of her own. The story provides a catalyst to remind young readers of the power of the sounds trapped within them.Buhle Ngaba is an award-winning South African actor and writer. She co-founded the non-profit KaMatla to aid thedevelopment of the arts in underprivileged communities and to develop the legacy of storytelling amongst the youth.</p>
