<p>Urdu: A First Reader is intended primarily for those who are known as "heritage speakers" of Urdu. That is to say, for those students who grew up in an environment where Urdu was spoken in the home, but do not speak it themselves. The book further assumes that those who use it, will have already been introduced to Urdu alphabets and know how to read simple words. With such background, they will be in a position to benefit from this book with the help of a teacher. Each lesson is based on everyday objects and situations. The sentences are short and easy. An Urdu-English vocabulary list is also provided for each lesson. Reading practice is reinforced through repetition of the same word in different contexts. The book contains lessons based on every letter of the Urdu alphabet and ends with ten extra lessons for further practice. With the current lack of introductory Urdu teaching materials, it is hoped that this book will fill a major gap by providing such a book for heritage speakers.</p>
