The new Handbook of Old Gallatin County is a compilation of mostly 19th and early 20th century sources on Gallatin County's fascinating history. In other words you're reading the biography your ancestor wrote probably in his own words and syntax. 
Here’s what’s included: 
The complete version of the 1887 History of Gallatin County as published by Goodspeed Publishing Company taken from their five-county history of southeastern Illinois. Everything's included as in the original, with the only changes of additional section headings and paragraph breaks as desperately needed. Not only are the original footnotes still there, but also new ones noting any corrections or addition comments as needed. 
Miscellaneous Anecdotes of Early Gallatin County — a collection of writings on everything from the early saltworks to a sketch of the 1891 grand jury. 
Military History of Gallatin County — a collection of writings on the military actions of Gallatin County residents from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War with a special focus on the frontier Indian battles in southeastern Illinois during the decade that centered around the War of 1812 as well as some of the actions taking place in the county during the Civil War. Also included will be complete rosters (as best as can be determined) of Gallatin County soldiers in the Black War, Mexican, Civil and Spanish-American Wars. 
Gallatin County Biographies — More than 250 biographies will be included here pulled from the 1876 State Atlas of Illinois, the 1883 History of White County (which included chapters on the northern two townships of Gallatin), the 1887 History of Gallatin County, the 1905 Memoirs of the Lower Ohio Valley and the 1912 History of Southern Illinois. Also included are a handful of other miscellaneous biographies from a scattering of sources. 
Plus... and probably most important of all to researchers... a full name and subject listing Index in the back of book. Every name is listed, women twice many times, once under their married name and again under their maiden name (if known). 
In addition to the new annotated footnotes in the 1887 history portion, all the stories included in the Anecdotes and Military History are printed verbatim from the original source and are footnoted with the source. The idea has been to take all the good stories and original source material that's scattered and put it into one volume.

The Old Slave House has stood for some 166 years a few miles east of the village of Equality, Illinois. An antebellum plantation manor, it's long held the history of nefarious activities in its attic, stories of kidnappings and victims held against their will. It's been recognized for its ghosts — some say it's one of the most haunted places in America. It's been recognized for its architecture. That's why it's on the National Register of Historic Places and in September 2004, the National Park Service recognized it for its history as a station on the Reverse Underground Railroad by naming it to its National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program. Slaves, Salt, Sex & Mr. Crenshaw is the result of eight years of research into the real history behind the stories long told to visitors, from the kidnappings and slave breeding to the visit of Abraham Lincoln and the potent political connections, both real and those just claimed, held by the owner John Hart Crenshaw and his family.

Slaves, Salt, Sex & Mr. Crenshaw: The Real Story of the Old Slave House and America's Reverse Underground R.R.

Slaves, Salt, Sex &amp; Mr. Crenshaw tells the story of the Old Slave House which may be America's last station standing on the Reverse Underground Railroad. Originally built as the manor house for John Hart Crenshaw's Hickory Hill plantation, folklore renamed the site the Old Slave House by the early 20th Century following decades of stories associating slaves on the third floor attic. Although located in the supposedly free state of Illinois, Crenshaw kidnapped free persons of color and sold them south into slavery. The title comes from mid 20th Century consultant's report who didn't care much for the site. Following its closing after 70 years as a private museum and tourist attraction, Jon Musgrave joined two other local historians trying to dig past the folklore for the actual history of Crenshaw and the house. What they found surprised even them. Kidnappers targeted more than 100 persons in southeastern Illinois prior to the Civil War. Almost two-thirds have been tied to Crenshaw and his activities. The book also covers the history of the saltworks between Equality and Shawneetown, Illinois, and Crenshaw's role as the "Salt King" as well as his other business ventures including his controversial role in slave breeding with the stud slave Bob Wilson who lived to 1946 and told his story to dozens of people during the last quarter century of his life. This 3rd Edition replaces the out-of-print hardcover 2nd Edition. Other than minor edits it has not been updated.
