Illustrated with 265 black-and-white and 16 color reproductions offering many previously unpublished jewelers' drawings, inventory drawings, surviving jewels and period portraits, it traces the vicissitudes of famed royal pieces, considers iconographical implications of secular and religious jewels and examines possible contributing influences from abroad, as for example those suggested by pre-Columbian gold from Spanish America.
