The seaside is the twentieth century's pre-eminent global tourism site and this is the first book of its kind to examine political and power relations in modern seaside resort development. As an historical study of seaside tourism in Devon-England's most popular domestic holiday destination-it reveals the complex interplay between ideology, class and power and the consumption of landscape and place. Paul Getty Museum, with its lively narrative miniatures, stands as a testament to the artistic heights achieved during that period. 
In this richly illustrated book, all eighty-two of the manuscript’s images are reproduced in color for the first time. They are accompanied by a full commentary. A general introduction to the history of thirteenth-century English illustrated Apocalypse manuscripts is followed by a succinct study of the artistic context of the Getty’s manuscript, as well as a consideration of its style and date. The rest of the commentary is devoted to a stylistic and iconographic analysis of the manuscript’s images; there is also a complete translation of the text.

The litanies of the monastic orders in England, above all those of the Benedictines, are key witnesses of devotion to the saints of the British Isles, whose relics and shrines were mostly in Benedictine abbeys and cathedral priories. However, although many of the calendars of the Benedictines have been published, litanies are more rare, and the majority of those within this volume are presented as text editions for the first time. The majority of the texts are Benedictine, but the few surviving litanies from the other monastic orders, Carthusians, Cistercians and Cluniacs, are included, and also those of the Order of Fontevrault. This is the first of two volumes and covers the abbeys and priories from Abbotsbury to Peterborough. The second volume will contain the litanies from the Cluniac Priory of Pontefract to York, St Mary's Abbey. Nigel Morgan is Honorary Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College.
