With their bright and open spaces, in low buildings that bland with the landscape, Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie house designs altered the course of 20th Century architecture--and established a true American style. Many of these beautiful structures, found in Oak Park and River Forest, have now become registered National Historic Landmarks. They include small houses and mansions, churches and government buildings, gas stations and bridges. And Wright thought not only of the building itself, but of the interior design: he, himself, often chose or created the furniture, glass, fabrics, and other accessories that pulled everything together. First among these masterpieces was the Ward Willits House (and gardener's cottage), built in Highland Park, Illinois in 1902. Another piece de resistance, recognized as the epitome of the form: Chicago's exquisite Robie House (1909). Also included are the Johnson "Wingspread," Petit Memorial Chapel, and other major homes built from 1901-1937--so you can see how Wright's work evolved through time.

From 1917 to 1924 Frank Lloyd Wright spent much of his time in California, and there created a small number of buildings that remain classics of American architecture. Using a groundbreaking building process, which he called his "textile block system" these buildings were constructed with precast concrete blocks, molded with decoration on both sides and inset with glass to allow light to filter through in interesting patterns. The prototype was one of Wright's most famous buildings, "Hollyhock House," influenced by ancient Mayan design and built for heiress Aline Barnsdall in the Hollywood Hills. In these colorful pages, visit the Hollyhock along with some of Wright's most distinctive textile block structures, including the Ennis, Millard, Freeman, and Storer houses, as well as the controversial Arizona Biltmore Hotel. Following an illuminating introduction that explains the architect’s philosophy of design and his approach to interiors, 15 case studies and a selection of other buildings showcase just how spectacular, yet livable, Frank Lloyd Wright’s interiors could be. He never simply constructed an “outer shell” for the building and walked away: he created an entire elaborate layout, and his use of interior space and the furnishings he designed are as startling and attractive as his structures. From art-glass lamps and statuary to tables and chairs to carpets and fabrics, he strove to carry through carefully planned out themes and motifs.
