This study presents and examines the available data on mould-made terracotta lamps manufactured and/or used in Alexandria in the 3rd to 1st century BC. Mlynarczyk divides the lamps into twenty-eight types and discusses distribution, fabric, manufacturing centres, shape and decoration, and dating. She concludes that some of the types were unique to Alexandria, while others have their counterparts in Cyprus, Syro-Palestine, Asia Minor and Greece, with particular links indicated between Egypt and Palestine.

For 60 years Qumran research has been focused on epigraphy, exegesis, and the historical sources of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The manuscripts are now published and accessible, and research is turning in a positive way to the archaeology of the site and its context. The time has come to provide researchers with a complete documentation. The excavator, Roland de Vaux, had given preliminary reports and a valuable interpretation made in the immediate aftermath of the excavations. Since considerable progress has been made in the archeology of Hellenistic and Roman Palestine, however, Qumran has to be reassessed and the interpretation objectively verified.  Volume IIIA presents an up-to-date archaeological reconsideration: a shorter and more precise chronology, in which the earthquake of 31 BC is deleted; the concept of an Essene community is challenged, owing to the lack of a suitable infrastructure; the cemetery itself is connected with a Jewish diaspora scattered around the Dead Sea. Other facilities strengthen the Jewish character of the site, however. The function of Qumran fits better with the rites of a pilgrimage on the occasion of the festivals of Passover and Pentecost.  In the second part, the peripheral Essene facilities, expanded around an earlier Hellenistic center, are analyzed and described. The essay seeks to outline their internal consistency and to determine their function. The restoration of a stratigraphy, by cross-checking the excavation archives, leads to a redistribution of pottery in four levels in a more precise chronology.  The reconsideration makes use of anthropology, which opens up the archaeological field and throws additional light on the manuscripts.

<p>Excavations carried since 1965 at Nea Paphos by the Polish Archeological Mission have produced a number of important discoveries. One of the most spectacular was the so-called Villa of Theseus, a Roman palace, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, probably an official residence of the Roman governors of Cyprus. It comprised a series of figural mosaics, marble sculptures and a quantity of small finds. The so-called House of Aion, another Roman edifice unearthed in 1983/84 has yielded a truly unique set of figural mosaics with mythological themes. All these finds testify to the importance of Nea Paphos the "sacred metropolis of all the cities of the island". Investigations carried out under the Roman buildings have produced rich finds relating to earlier periods. Fragments of Hellenistic streets, drains, houses, workshops, hundreds of artifacts of all kinds allow to draw a picture of the development of the town from the end of the 4th cent. B.C., a probable date of its official founding, down to the Roman period. The present study, the third volume in our series entitled "Nea Paphos" has at its basis almost twenty campaigns of excavations and innumerable field obserevations made by all members of the mission and the authoress herself who participated for several years in the field work. The study reconsiders all the existing archaeological data and all other sources pertaining to the early history of the town, be they epigraphical or literary. Upon this basis it draws a multifacial picture of the town development in the first three centuries of its existence.</p>
