This volume chronicles the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Contact Angle, Wettability and Adhesion, Toronto, Canada, June 2006. Wettability is of pivotal importance in many and varied arenas, ranging from mundane to micro-and nanofluidics to lithography to biomedical. The topic of polymer surface modification is of tremendous contemporary interest because of its critical importance in many and varied technological applications where polymers are used. Currently there is brisk research activity in unraveling the mechanisms of surface modification and finding ways to prolong the life of surface treatment. Also there is acute interest and need to devise new, improved and economical means to modify polymer surfaces. Silanes and Other Coupling Agents, Volume 5

With all the environmental concerns and constraints today and stricter future regulations, there is a patent need to replace materials noxious to the environment by environmentally-friendly alternatives. Electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) are one such example. ECAs offer an excellent alternative to lead-solder interconnects for microelectronic packaging applications. ECAs are used in electronics for laptop computers, camcorders, watch electronics, hard-drive suspensions and a myriad of electronic equipments. Environmentally-friendly ECAs offer many advantages vis-Ã -vis solder, such as simple and low-temperature processing conditions, better thermo mechanical performance and finer pitch. This book is based on the two Special Issues of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology (JAST vol. 22, no. 8-9 and vol. 22, no. 14) dedicated to this topic. Superhydrophobic surfaces (water contact angles higher than 150Âº) can only be achieved by a combination of hydrophobicity (low surface energy materials) with appropriate surface texture. In nature one can find an array of impressive and elegant examples of superhydrophobic surfaces. For example, on a lotus leaf rain drops bounce off after impact, then entirely roll off the lotus leaf and drag along any dirt particles, without leaving residues. The artificial design of superhydrophobic and self-cleaning surfaces has become an extremely active area of fundamental and applied research.
