Virginia was the oldest, most populous and richest colony in the South, with early architecture of unsurpassed elegance and variety. Thomas Jefferson, who was an amateur architect as well as statesman, laid the foundations for the profession of architecture in young America, by encouraging the English-born Benjamin Latrobe and Robert Mills, who later claimed to be the first native-born professionally trained architect in America. Both Latrobe and Mills created important buildings in Virginia. The state suffered a relative decline in population, prosperity and cultural vigor as people abandoned the old, exhausted and overcrowded lands of the upper and coastal South and flooded to the fertile Southwest. Nevertheless, Virginia encouraged the work of excellent architects and builders, among them the renowned New York-based A.J. Davis, who created a considerable number of Italian villas and Gothic "castles." Since the rescue of Washington's Mount Vernon in 1858, Virginia has led the nation in the preservation of its historic buildings. The restoration of Virginia's colonial capital, Williamsburg, became a tastemaking shrine to the preservation of early American culture. Virginians of today are again leaders in the reinterpretation and renewed restoration of the state's most important buildings.

Buildings are three-dimensional history books that reflect the comings and goings, successes and failures, aspirations and follies of real people. Virginia was the oldest, most populous and richest colony in the South, with early architecture of unsurpassed elegance and variety. Maryland, thanks to an early start and the successful cultivation of tobacco, produced colonial architecture second only to Virginia and South Carolina, the rich rice colony. 
Meanwhile, North Carolina, with treacherous coasts, poor harbors and shallow rivers, was slow to prosper and remained isolated. Georgia, the last and poorest of the English colonies, struggled from insecurity and near collapse till the 1760's and, like North Carolina, remained sparsely settled, poor and undeveloped till after the Revolution. Louisiana, the former colony of France, continued to be dominated by French culture, French language and French laws long after it was sold to the United States in 1803. 
In the 1760's Virginians and Carolinians, moving into the uplands and already pressing against the mountains, began exploring Tennessee and Kentucky. After the Revolution, this wave of transcontinental migration was renewed, not only to Tennessee and Kentucky, but also to northeastern and coastal Georgia and, leapfrogging lands in the Mississippi Territory still occupied by the Indians, to the banks of the lower Mississippi river. 
Georgia and North Carolina enjoyed their greatest prosperity during the heyday of the Greek Revival. Mississippi and Alabama, the two states carved from the historic Mississippi Territory, were settled by a third wave of immigration in the 1830's that produced a surprising variety and quality of buildings in the relatively brief period before the Civil War. 
These books try to explore Southern architecture beyond the clichs. The great buildings of the Old South were created by outsiders and newcomers, especially New Englanders, whose contributions to Southern society and culture have been long underestimated. Thus, these historic buildings show how the South participated far more fully in the mainstream of American life before the Civil War than has been generally appreciated.

The cotton gin transformed the last and poorest of the colonies into a thriving center of commerce, bringing opulent villas and fine Greek Revival mansions to Georgia. Founded in 1733 as a refuge for poor and improvident people who could not "make it" in England, Georgia became the last and poorest American colony. Only a handful of 18th-century buildings has survived. But after the invention of the cotton gin on a plantation outside of Savannah in 1793, the transformation of Georgia and the South began. The port of Savannah prospered as never before. In 1817 the young, professionally trained, English-born architect William Jay began building opulent villas in the London Regency mode. Meanwhile, New England housewrights brought the refined Adam-Federal style to the capital, Milledgeville, and to middle Georgia. In the 1840's, master carpenters, with the aid of pattern books, produced the finest Greek Revival mansions of the Old South in Athens, Washington, Macon, Roswell and Columbus. Among the principal buildings described and illustrated are the James Vann House, Spring Place, an Indian chief's frontier brick mansion; Thomas Spalding House, Sapelo Island, a gentleman amateur's Palladian palace on a wilderness island; Richard Richardson House, Savannah, the first and greatest of William Jay's famous Regency villas (a whole chapter is devoted to Jay in Georgia); the Governor's Mansion at Milledgeville, a Greek Revival masterwork by Irish-born Charles B. Cluskey; and Charles Green Mansion, Savannah, the greatest Gothic house south of Virginia, designed by New Yorker John Norris for an English-born cotton merchant. Many pages are devoted to memorable Savannah, with its 18th-century town plan, inspired by Renaissance military textbooks but expanded for 125 years as an unparalleled example of public planning, and its many treelined, brick-paved streets and stately row houses.
