Selected Poems

The poems in this volume vary widely in length, subject, and setting (from Mayo, to Tuscany, to Japan). With a Zen-like grace, even the briefest poems hurdle logical gaps and sidestep reason to get to truths. The poet’s acute vision is directed outward, and we know him only through the light he casts on the world’s things as he holds them in loving, elegiac frames. Winner of the Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Poetry, 2001;  Winner of the T. S. Eliot Poetry Prize, 2001; Winner of the Hawthornden Prize, 2000.

The Weather In Japan

The collected poems of Irish poet Michael Longley, spanning the years 1963-1983. Longley's preoccupations as a poet - love, death, nature, art, history - have invariably been intensified by the tragedy of Ulster. The poet's previous poetry collections include "No Continuing City" and "Gorse Fires".

Louis MacNeice was born in Belfast in 1907 and educated at Marlborough and Merton College, Oxford. For most of his working life he was a writer and producer for BBC radio. His death in 1963 was sudden and unexpected.
