For seven decades Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was a major figure in American art who, remarkably, maintained her independence from shifting artistic trends. She painted prolifically, and almost exclusively, the flowers, animal bones, and landscapes around her studios in Lake George, New York, and New Mexico, and these subjects became her signature images. Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (1887 - 1986) was an American artist. She was best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism". She studied art during the summers between 1912 and 1914 and was introduced to the principles and philosophies of Arthur Wesley Dow, who espoused created works of art based upon personal style, design, and interpretation of subjects, rather than trying to copy or represent them. This caused a major change in the way O'Keeffe felt about and approached art, as seen in the beginning stages of her watercolors from her studies at the University of Virginia and more dramatically in the charcoal drawings that she produced in 1915 that led to total abstraction. This book is a collection and analysis of O'Keeffe's early charcoal and watercolours of 1915-16 in a collection belonging to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Set of three spiral bound sketchbooks and one paperback volume of text. The sketchbooks are high-quality facsimiles of the originals produced by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in conjunction with an exhibit, “Jackson Pollock: Early Sketchbooks and Drawings”, held Oct. 22, 1997-Feb. 8, 1998. The accompanying volume includes general background on the sketchbooks, which date from 1937 to 1941, and two scholarly articles: “Pollock Interprets the Old Masters: Sketchbooks I and II” and “Pollock Studies the Mexican Muralists and The Surrealists: Sketchbook III”.

The catalogue features the work of Robert Blackburn, Raymond Steth, Horace Woodroff and Dox Trash, among others, with a smaller selection of paintings and watercolours by such notable artists as Horace Pippin, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Bill Traylor. Included are essays on the work in its cultural context and on printmaking techniques. Most of the works in this volume are acquisitions of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
