I Smith, Thomas Hine, Reyner Banham, and Dolores Hayden Southern California's Case Study houses constitute an essential chapter in the history of modern architecture in America. This book documents "Arts & Architecture magazine's sponsorship of some of the most important architects of the region and the generation - Charles Eames, Craig Ellwood, A. Quincy Jones, Pierre Koenig, Richard Neutra, Raphael Soriano, and Eero Saarinen, among others - reflecting an unprecedented commitment to reinventing the house as a way of redefining living. The program consisted of thirty-six experimental prototypes designed, and the majority built, between 1945 and 1966. The architects and the magazine shared a commitment to experimenting with materials and techniques, rationalizing plan and construction and integrating house, furnishings, and landscape into a coherent whole. Yet a number of the essayists in this book suggest that what made the houses distinctive and influential was not so much their International-Style modernism, but how that style was domesticated and scaled to the single-family home - and how it forecast what is now called the California lifestyle. Entries documenting each of the Case Study projects and many previously unpublished photographs by such well-known photographers as Julius Shulman and Marvin Rand are included. The legacy of the Case Study House program is then addressed by six contemporary architects who were commissioned by The Museum of Contemporary Art to execute new designs for a decidedly different present. The book includes drawings, plans, and photographs of projects by Itsuko Hasegawa,Craig Hodgetts, Toyo Ito Robert Mangurian, Eric Owen Moss, and Adele Naude Santos, along with their statements about the work. Esther McCoy (1904–1989) is one of the twentieth century’s foremost architecture historians, and one of the greatest chroniclers of the architecture of midcentury southern California. Her 1960 book Five California Architects has long been acknowledged as an indispensable classic, and as Reyner Banham famously observed of her, “no one can write about architecture in California without acknowledging her as the mother of us all.” Piecing Together Los Angeles: An Esther McCoy Reader is the first anthology of McCoy’s writing. It features a selection of some 70 pieces--ranging from her 1945 article “Schindler, Space Architect” to “Arts &amp; Architecture: Case Study Houses,” a 1989 essay commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. From fiction for The New Yorker to seminal essays on new architectural forms, McCoy charts the progressive edge of American idealism, from the collective utopian spirit of Jazz Age Greenwich Village, through the Depression and the war years, to the optimism of the 1950s and 1960s. In preparing this volume, writer and editor Susan Morgan extensively researched the McCoy papers at the Archives of American Art. Her editorial decisions were based, in part, on McCoy’s original selections for an unrealized anthology solicited by W. W. Norton in 1968. Expanding on that project, Morgan has included essays, articles, lectures, correspondence, memoirs and short stories that illuminate the breadth and complexity of McCoy’s writing and the southern California region that inspired her groundbreaking work.

A Constructed View: The Architectural Photography of Julius Shulman

Julius Shulman, one of the great master of architectural photography, is the preeminent recoreder of early California modernism. By 1927, when he was sixteen, Shulman was already using the family Brownie box camera to document his Southern Californis surroundings and experiences; in 1936, his professional career was launched when he sent Richard Neutra some uncommissioned photographs of the architect's Kun House. Shulman went on to document the famous Case Study House Program (architects included Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig, and Eero Saarinen) and also the architecure of the 1930s through the 1980s, especially that of Southern California, but also country and worldwide. His subjects included the buildings of R.M. Schindler, John Lautner, Raphael Soriano, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Oscar Niemeyer, among many others. Through his work, Shulman defined the image of Los Angeles and framed the architecture of the time for a global audience.In addition to an overview of Shulman's career and photographic oevre, this book emphasizes Shulman's method of "constructing" photographic views. These contructions, which complemented his innate ability to compose striking photographs, often transcends reality to capture the spirit, time and place of a work of architecture. An analysis of architecture's visual presentation examines not only the media of the era--John Entenza's Arts & Architecture, for instance--but also the work of Shulman's photographic contemporaries.
