<p>The book provides a history of the London dock strike of 1889 which closely followed the successful 1888 `Matchgirls' strike at Bryant and May, and the equally successful strike, led by Will Thorne, for an eight-hour day at the Beckton Gas Works. The London dock strike was not only important in that the impoverished workers gained a substantial increase in their wage but it also directly resulted in the formation of non-craft based unions of wide appeal to unskilled labourers, the so-called `new unionism'.</p>
