"None is acceptable before God, save the meek and lowly," the prophet Mormon taught. (Moroni 7:44.) Why is meekness such an important requirement for salvation? What does it mean to be meek? How can we attain meekness? In Meek and Lowly, Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, discusses this critical-but often misunderstood-principle. "The rigorous requirements of Christian discipleship are clearly unattainable without meekness," he writes. "In fact, meekness is needed in order to be spiritually successful, whether in matters of the intellect, in the management of power, in the dissolution of personal pride, or in coping with the challenges of daily life." The first step, Elder Maxwell claims, is to take upon us the Savior's yoke and to learn about Him and His teachings. Other requirements are to develop humbleness of mind; to be humble in our dealings with others, particularly those whom we lead; and to overcome the deadly sin of pride. Elder Maxwell also explains the relation between meekness and the grace of God, the blessings that come through being meek, and the examples of meekness found in the lives of prophets both ancient and modern. "Meekness, though lowly, has its own quiet majesty," he concludes, for "by being yoked to Jesus and His gospel, we are drawn closer to Him. Proximity only increases our meekness."

What is required of a disciple of Christ? How can one reconcile his faith and obedience to the Gospel with the world's cry for freedom, relevance, science and technology? This small volume deals with such dilemmas of discipleship. In his foreword, the author states that "whenever individuals face their time to choose and respond to Jesus' entreaty to 'Come ye after me,' they place their feet on the straight and narrow path where Jesus walked-a path that is always the same with only one gate at journey's end, and Jesus himself is the gatekeeper."    This, then, is the message of A Time to Choose: observations of what discipleship means in today's world, the demands it makes of those who follow the Savior, the need to discern and choose the paths that lead to the straight and narrow way, the relevance of Christ's message, and the need for the disciple to be able to articulate and communicate this message at home as well as in the world.    The author concludes: "Finally, each of us somehow finds time to do the things we really want to do. In We Talk of Christ, We Rejoice in Christ, Elder Neal A. Maxwell, an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, presents the glorious message of the gospel in a unique format. The scriptures - the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price - together all elaborate, reinforce and clarify God's purposes for mankind, at the center or which is our Savior, His atonement, and His plain, precious and redemptive gospel.

Plain and Precious Things

Duties and ponderings have occasionally stirred the author to prepare drafts of sermons which, for one reason or another, were not spoken; or perhaps only small portions were extracted and used. Other times, a talk has been prepared for which there was neither occasion nor audience. Whether the author simply needed the spiritual calisthenics which go with such added preparation, it now matters not. These "Sermons Not Spoken" are here printed for audiences unseen, but with no less desire that somehow, for them, they will prove helpful.
