Excerpt from Trigonometry: With the Theory and Use of LogarithmsTrigonometry, like all branches of mathematics, can be indefinitely expanded both by elaborating and multiplying theoretical details, and by extending the number and kind of applications. It does not follow that it is desirable that this be done. On the contrary, in view of our American conditions, where so much time has been lost by the boy before he begins the study of trigonometry, it is highly desirable that he master the essentials of the subject as rapidly as is consistent with thoroughness, in order that his progress to analytic geometry and the calculus be not unnecessarily delayed.This textbook has been prepared with a view to giving an adequate treatment of what is essential, in a form sufficiently concise so that the real simplicity and brevity of the subject may be in evidence. The number of principles involved is very limited and should not be artificially multiplied by the formulation of rules.The exercises, instead of being scattered through the text, are collected at the end of the book. They are divided into chapters and sections corresponding exactly to those of the text, so that when a certain section has been studied it is an easy matter to turn to the corresponding exercises. It is thought that the supply and variety of exercises will be found adequate for all ordinary purposes, and will allow the teacher a broad range of selection.
