This book is a compilation of nine stories, each one set in the small Texas town of Bethlehem in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Each story has the central character, Sophie Randolph, in common. She is the main thread that brings cohesion to the stories. As each customer visits her establishment, she is reminded of a story either about another patron or about an incident that has happened in the past (or even an event that is unfolding in the present). Her patrons love her, and they love her stories. They know what she tells them is true.
Sophie tells Carol Moss, a newcomer to Bethlehem, the story of The Wages of Sin, in which Willie Franklin, another customer, commits an especially gruesome crime against his friend in order to take his wages. She also feels compelled to tell Ellen Minninger, a retired attorney, the story of A Favor for Matilda, her waitress, who has been raped by another resident of the town. And Sophie listens patiently as Essie Turner tells her the story of Mrs. Olivia Adams, and gives Essie some sound advice in Benefit of the Doubt.
Sophie has been living in the little town of Bethlehem all her life, and she has seen and experienced many joys and sorrows. She enjoys talking to her customers, and they enjoy hearing her talk. She doesn't get into their business; she just loves to entertain them with her stories, and she has many to tell.
