Excerpt from Archives of Maryland: Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1732-1753Intimations that the scheme of connecting the northern and southern French possessions in America by a cordon of fortified posts enveloping the British colonies was about to be carried out, and the certainty that a short time would bring about the final struggle for the possession of North America, kept the minds of far-seeing men in a state of constant anxiety. The news, therefore, of the establishment Of a French post at Crown Point in British territory, within three days' march of Albany, was very alarming, and emphasised the importance of keeping the Iroquois tribes friendly to the British as a counterpoise to the Algonkin tribes, or Canada Indians, as they were called, on whom the French placed much reliance.Other troubles there were in abundance; among the rest that old grievance of the over-production Of tobacco, and its consequent low price. Attempts had been more than once made to restrict the pro duction, but without success. Now some of the people took the law into their own hands; and bands of men rode about cutting down the growing plants, so that militia had to be held in readiness to put a stop to such proceedings.The boundary troubles with Pennsylvania also took on an acute form. Although the fortieth parallel of north latitude had been fixed by the charter as the northern boundary of Maryland, William Penn had seized a strip some fifteen miles wide lying south of this boundary, and held on to it with obstinate tenacity. Excerpt from Archives of Maryland: Proceedings and Acts of the General Assembly of Maryland, March 1697/8 July, 1699The sessions of Assembly, held in March and October, 1698, did not pass without the usual bickerings between the Governor and the Lower House. Both sides were suspicious, captious about punctilios, and ready to see Offence where none was intended. However, the news that Nicholson Was about to be removed to the government of Virginia begat a more amicable feeling, and they parted with expressions Of mutual good will.In 1697 an epidemic of some sort prevailed in Charles county. It having been found that the sick were benefited by drinking the waters Of the Cool Springs in St. Mary's county, in 1698 an act was passed for purchasing these Springs and the adjoining land at the public expense. Here cottages were to be erected and furnished with fuel and other necessaries for the free use of the sick poor. A trace of the bigotry of the time appears in a complaint of the Delegates to the Governor that the Roman Catholic priests had a habit of going among the sick and dying, administering the sacraments, which extravagant and presumptuous behaviour they ask him to prohibit by proclamation.A somewhat humorous incident of the October session was this; Nicholson, desirous, before his departure from Maryland, to heap coals of fire upon the heads of the perverse Delegates, applied to the English Committee Of Trade to procure from the King an Act Of pardon for the Province. The Committee (in some wonder, we may surmise) did so and the Act was signed and transmitted. The Delegates, far from being overjoyed at the royal clemency, drily remarked that they were not conscious that the Province labored under any guilt, and therefore humbly conceived that no pardon was needed. Nicholson, in high dudgeon, told them that they were the first people he had ever heard of that refused their King's mercy, and since they had so little grace, he would at once ptit into execution all the judgments on navigation bonds, which he had not intended to do. Archives of Maryland: Muster Rolls and Other Records of Service of Maryland Troops in the American Revolution 1775 1783 (Classic Reprint)

This is the standard on the more than 20,000 Maryland troops in the Revolutionary War, and as such it is a book of the greatest genealogical and historical magnitude. 
The plan of the work is archival, that is, lists and documents are printed as found, with a general index of names at the back of the book. This is perhaps the best method of documentation possible because it enables the researcher to detemine the names of men associated in any command. The records drawn on for this compilation derive chiefly from muster rolls, payrolls, and Land Office records, thus rendering evidence of unassailable authority for Continental service in the American Revolution. Lists enumerated include the Flying Camp, Maryland Troop Musters, the German Regiment, Artillery Rolls, Rolls of Men in Lee's Dragoons and Pulaski's and Armand's Legions, Naval Rolls, Invalid Returns, and Rolls of Escaped and Exchanged Prisoners. While tabular information given for each soldier varies according to command, it generally includes full name, rank, dates of enlistment and discharge, and miscellaneous remarks such as whether wounded, killed, or missing. A few rolls are more detailed, giving birthplace, age, height, and comments on personal appearance.

Excerpt from Archives of Maryland: Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1671 1681 While the last volume of the Archives was passing through the press, the Maryland Historical Society was so fortunate as to discover two volumes of original Council Records of which no copies are known to exist, and which are therefore of the highest importance. They had been removed from Annapolis certainly more than thirty years ago, and were discovered almost by accident. Our regular series of Council Records broke off in 1674 (the record for the three or four previous years having been very fragmentary), after which there was a void of eighteen years in the original journals. '1 his void we were partly enabled to fill by the discovery of a copy of'a Council Book for the years 1686 - 1689 preserved in the Public Record Office, London, of which the Society had a transcript made, which has been printed in the Archives. This however still left a gap of twelve years, which we bridged, imperfectly, bm as far as was then in our power, by copies of papers belonging to that time, preserved in the English Record Office.
