The book is a comprehensive directory of 12 local walking trails, including maps and details about access to public transportation, bathroom facilities, mileage, slope and trail surface. Most of these trails double as cycling routes, although they draw more walkers than bikers. Some routes are well known, like the Eliza Furnace, known colloquially as the "jail trail" that runs between the eastbound and westbound lanes of the busy Parkway East ("The buzz of the city gives way to the open feel of modern industry and great views of the Monongahela River"). Others are underused, such as the more peaceful trail across the river on the South Side. Eight are accessible by public transportation, five are within the city of Pittsburgh, four include stretches of the Montour Trail west of the city and three are east of the city. Lengths range from a 1.5-mile loop around Washington's Landing to a round-trip, 9.2-mile option on the Youghiogheny River Trail from Sutersville to Dravo Cemetery in Elizabeth Township. Most are 1.5 to 4 miles. The walks are typically out and back so they can be shortened to suit the individual. They all are a short section of an extensive trail systems so they can be lengthened as well. The guide was developed because Allegheny Trail Alliance got so many requests for information when they spoke to groups about trail opportunities.

The trails of the Allegheny Trail Alliance connect with the C&amp;O Canal Towpath at Cumberland, creating a traffic-free route between Pittsburgh and Washington DC. Although the final gap into Pittsburgh won't be finished for another year or two, the distance of 335 continuous miles on the ground make an outstanding bike trip. To help you plan this trip -- or a shorter trip along this route -- this book has brought together most of the information that you will need to plan your trip. This Third Edition (Aug 2007) is 48 pages and includes all of the information in the previous editions and more. The table of B&amp;B, motels, restaurants and grocery stores has been updated. Several shorter itineraries have been added. In addition a mile by mile mileage table showing each mile and associated town has been added.

Brady Brady and the Icehogs were thrilled to be playing in the most important hockey tournament of the season – The Gold Stick. All the Icehogs worked hard on their playing skills – and on making sure that everyone in town knew about the tournament. There were posters everywhere describing the big event. Brady Brady was so excited he slept in his equipment the night before the first Gold Stick game. The Icehogs played well; the arena was crowed, and the Icehogs advanced to the final. Then trouble struck. The Icehogs’ opponents for the final match-up were the Dragoons. Everyone knew the Dragoons played dirty hockey; they tripped opponents, slashed, and cheated. But the Icehogs rose to the challenge, and the final game of the Gold Stick proved a valuable lesson for all involved.
