Photographs by one of French cinema's most influential and enigmatic artists.
Any new film and any new book by French filmmaker Chris Marker is an event. Marker gave film lovers one of their most memorable experiences with La Jetée (1962)―a time-travel montage set after a nuclear war that inspired Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys (1995). His still camerawork is not as well known, but Marker has been taking photographs as long as he has been making films. Staring Back presents 200 black-and-white photographs from Marker's personal archives, taken from 1952 to 2006. Some of the photographs are related to his classic films (which include Le Jetée, Sans Soleil, ¡Cuba Si!, and The Case of the Grinning Cat), others are portraits of famous faces (Simone Signoret, Akira Kurosawa), but most are pictures of people Marker has encountered as he has traveled the world (an extra who appeared in Kurosawa's Ran, a woman seen on a street in Siberia). The central section of the book contains a series of photographs documenting political protests Marker has witnessed, including the march on the Pentagon in 1967, the events of May 1968 in Paris, and the tumultuous 2006 demonstrations protesting the French government's proposed employment policies. The photographs are accompanied by several unpublished texts by Marker, including the English language text of The Case of the Grinning Cat and Marker's annotations for some of the photos. The book―which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University―also includes essays by Wexner Center curator Bill Horrigan and art historian Molly Nesbit.

“Tabloids love to catch people unaware,” writes the legendary film auteur Chris Marker (born 1921) in his introduction to this beautiful volume of new photographs. “My aim… is exactly―small wonder―the opposite of tabloids. I try to give them their best moment, often imperceptible in the stream of time, sometimes 1/50 of a second that makes them truer to their inner selves.” Passengers accordingly portrays the private reveries and absent-minded gestures that can be seen every day on the Paris Métro (and by implication any other subway): mothers cradling their children, couples whispering intimately, women wistfully staring out the window or into the middle distance, engrossed in thought. Made between 2008 and 2010, this series of 200 photographs―Marker’s first in color―marvelously captures the dislocated mental spaces we occupy on the subway, and the ways in which we devise strategies for escapism, sending out invisible boundaries to endure the constant tiny encroachments of modern urban life. Marker enhances his photographs to draw out both the blotchy pixilation of the lo-fi digital technology used and to add painterly coloration, endowing them with otherworldly presence. A separate color poster by Marker titled “A Subway Quartet” is inserted beneath the printed glassine wrappers of each copy.

En mai 1958, Chris Marker participe à un voyage organisé par le parti communiste français en République populaire de Corée, cinq ans après la fin de la guerre. Il rassemble en peu de temps un matériau documentaire impressionnant (photographies et notes), dont il tire un essai photographique en sept chapitres, Coréennes, publié aux éditions du Seuil (où il dirige la collection « Petite planète »). Marker écrit en quatrième de couverture : « Coréennes doit s’entendre ici au sens de Gnossiennes ou Provinciales, c’est-à-dire “pièces d’inspiration coréenne”. On y retrouvera, outre les dames de Corée (qui à elles seules vaudraient plus d’un long métrage), des tortues qui rient, des géants qui pleurent, […] et sur ce décor un pays anéanti hier par la guerre, qui repousse “à la vitesse d’une plante au cinéma” entre Marx et les fées ».La citation ne dénie ni l’attraction de l’auteur pour les visages féminins, pour les regards qu’elles lui rendent (cet arrêt du temps par la rencontre dans le regard est l’un des traits auxquels on reconnaît Marker), ni le réflexe, en quelque sorte naturel, du franchissement des limites entre littérature (contes et légendes inclus), musique, cinéma, photographie, BD, histoire, etc. ; elle est fidèle aux « commentaires » de Marker, dont on ne doit pas oublier à quel point ils rompent, par leur parti pris littéraire et par l’assomption du « je » de l’écrivain, avec le didactisme, et la conception illustrative de l’image des « docucus » de l’époque. Il en va ainsi des « notes » de Coréennes, qui témoignent d’une hallucinante présence d’esprit (mais aussi de corps : être là) aux moindres détails qui font le prix du matériau documentaire quand il est, comme ici, repris dans le mouvement général d’une pensée profondément politique ; pensée politique qui ne dit pas son nom lorsqu’elle restitue à un peuple massacré par les guerres et les idéologies un peu de son histoire et une image de grâce et de force fidèle à sa culture. (La « beauté » des images de Coréennes est – il ne faudrait pas le dire – à elle seule une raison de l’avoir sous les yeux).C’est cet objet, épuisé, introuvable sauf à un prix prohibitif (900 euros), que L’Arachnéen réédite en fac-similé pour le remettre à la disposition du public.
