<p>Mangan's prose comes in a variety of forms: essays, stories, apologies, biographical sketches, comic articles, introductions to his poems and translations, a handful of surviving letters, and an unfinished autobiography. The Collected Poems of James Clarence Mangan (Collected Poems of James Clarence Mangan, 1818-1837)

The only book of Mangan's poetry published in his lifetime was the two-volume edition of his anthologia cermanica (1845) with his own preface. The bulk of these poems had first appeared in the Dublin University Magazine. The rest of his verse, some of it consisting of rebuses and conundrums, is scattered over various publications like The Dublin Penny Journal, The Comet, The Dublin Satirist, The Nation, and The Belfast Vindicator. Many of these poems have been hard to find and identify, often being published under pseudonyms and some-times anonymously. The editors have established an authoritative body of almost 1000 separate pieces, presented in chronological sequence with critical annotation, in four volumes.

James Clarence Mangan (1803-1849), the greatest Irish poet before Yeats, was for a long time both famous and unknown. While legends about him prospered after his death, his works remained largely unread. Only recently have his poems been collected by an international team of scholars and published by Irish Academic Press. It is from this four-volume edition that the present selection has been made. Containing upwards of 230 annotated poems, it provides the general reader with a more complete view of Mangan's many-faceted genius than has hitherto been available.

That Mangan is Ireland's foremost Romantic poet is by now a commonplace. The poetry of this self-proscribed 'Out-and-Outer' may have contributed to the picture of an eccentric genius writhing in romantic agony, far removed from the daily throng. But there was a public side to this private poet. In reality, from the age of 28, with his publication of the politically engaged 'The Two Flats: Our Quackstitution', this poÃ?Â?Ã?Â¨te maudit remained in constant dialogue with the wider reading public. Prose afforded the poet his podium. And much of his mature poetry is contained within prose articles. In prose, Mangan taught, thought, deliberated, parodied, and afforded glimpses of himself which were hidden from his poetic alter ego. In his German and Oriental Anthologies, he opened up a world of literature to his Irish readers. Articles like 'A Sixty-Drop Dose of Laudanum' betray his mastery of the well-turned aphorism. Stories like 'The Man in the Cloak' manifest his light-hearted fascination for the Gothic. C.P. Meehan prefaced his pioneering Essays in Prose and Verse by J.C. Mangan with the apologetic observation that 'every scrap of writing from Mangan's pen . deserves to be rescued from the countless contingencies to which manuscripts are exposed.' Having rescued Mangan's work in our collected edition, we offer no such apology: our best of Mangan's prose shows a man with his finger on the pulse, following his one precept-not to bore.
