J'étais fatigué du monde des renseignements, j'avais raté la guerre en Indochine, je pensais en savoir assez sur les insurrections et je voulais tester certaines de mes théories. Le 1er août 1956, le capitaine David Galula, 37 ans, prend le commandement d'une compagnie en Kabylie. Pacification en Algérie, texte inédit en France, est le récit de sa subtile conquête du terrain et des populations, dans une zone infestée par le FLN. Il y reconstitue de mémoire l'histoire détaillée de son brillant commandement, et expose ses théories de contre-insurrection et de pacification, qui, selon lui, vaudraient dans la plupart des cas. Il ne prétend pas traiter systématiquement ou analyser les aspects politiques plus larges de la guerre d'Algérie, ni juger de la valeur des problèmes ou de leur résolution à Alger et à Paris. Son point de vue est exclusivement celui d'un commandant dans un secteur particulier au cours d'une guerre où le gouvernement français et ses armées étaient décidés à vaincre militairement les rebelles. Les problèmes qu'il rencontra, les méthodes qu'il mit en oeuvre pour y répondre, sa description du comportement des officiers et des hommes envers la population locale et envers les rebelles et leurs partisans n'étaient pas tout à fait les mêmes que ceux des autres commandants. Galula envisageait la pacification de manière personnelle et créative, en tirant de sa méthode des résultats particulièrement efficaces. C'est pourquoi son récit nous est précieux.  Longtemps oubliés, les travaux de ce théoricien majeur seront redécouverts par l'État-major américain en 2004, au moment des guerres d'Afghanistan et d'Irak. Galula a été qualifié de Clausewitz de la contre-insurrection par le général David Petraeus, chef des expéditions militaires américaines en Afghanistan et en Irak dans la préface de la réédition de son célèbre essai Contre-insurrection: Théorie et pratique.
