Nathan Cranswick’s third child comes into the world on the day of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Whilst the Empire celebrates, Nathan’s concerns are about his family’s future. A gentle and wise preacher, he gratefully accepts the chance to move from the dingy, cramped house in Ingerby to the village of Moreland when he is offered a job on the splendid Heron estate. Anticipating peace and tranquillity for his wife and young family, his hopes are cruelly dashed when their new life is beset by problems from the beginning. A family scandal and the Boer War menace their whole future, but finally it is the agonising choice facing his gentle daughter which threatens to tear the family apart.

Three generations of the Pentecost family live in a state of permanent disarray in a huge, sprawling farmhouse. Seven-year-old Gaylord Pentecost is the innocent hero who observes the lives of the adults – Grandpa, Momma and Poppa and two aunties – with amusement and incredulity. Through Gaylord’s eyes, we witness the heartache suffered by Auntie Rose as the exquisite Auntie Becky makes a play for her gentleman friend, while Gaylord unwittingly makes the situation far worse.

When young Gaylord hears that a Bengal Tiger has escaped from the local circus, he and his young friend Henry immediately set about digging a trap. This public-spirited activity unwittingly causes serious injury to Grandpa, who spends an unhappy few weeks in hospital. His convalescence draws uninvited guests to Cypresses Farm; not least the winsome Miss Nightingale. She completely delights all the men folk but her girlish charm is just a little too much for Momma. And all the while, poor Poppa feels responsible for the drama that ensues and is utterly miserable in his role of pig in the middle?

A long hot summer in the Pentecost house promises the usual mayhem. Gaylord manages to persuade his mother to allow Christine, a German au pair, to stay. With the help of the pretty fräulein he discovers his awakening interest in the fairer sex. Momma notices that other people seem to appreciate Christine’s teutonic charms too, while ten-year-old Amanda falls hopelessly in love with Gaylord’s friend, Roger. Before long, Gaylord is wishing the heady days of summer would never end, while for Momma the first hint of autumn cannot come soon enough.
