The Texture of Industry: An Archaeological View of the Industrialization of North America

The Texture of Industry looks at the industrialization of North America from the perspective of the industrial archaeologist. This heavily illustrated study demonstrates the value of material evidence in the interpretation of the past. Using examples that range from Indian steatite quarries to automobile plants and coal mines, the authors examine manufacturing technology, transportation systems, and the effects of industrialization on the land. While historians have given ample attention to stories of entrepreneurship, heroic invention, and labor conflict, they have told us little about actual workplaces and the skills employed in them. Americans from past generations seldom wrote about their daily work. However, they did leave us examples of their tools, products, shops, and factories. They also left us industrial landscapes and communities that speak eloquently of the costs associated with the production of wealth from natural resources. Industrial archaeologists study physical traces in combination with documents and other sources. Their research has greatly expanded our understanding of industry and focused attention on the contributions of anonymous artisans who applied their skills to shape our industrial heritage. Patrick M. Malone demonstrates how innovative engineering helped make Lowell, Massachusetts, a potent symbol of American industrial prowess in the 19th century. 
Waterpower spurred the industrialization of the early United States and was the principal power for textile manufacturing until well after the Civil War. Industrial cities therefore grew alongside many of America’s major waterways. Ideally located at Pawtucket Falls on the Merrimack River, Lowell was one such city―a rural village rapidly transformed into a booming center for textile production and machine building. Malone explains how engineers created a complex canal and lock system in Lowell which harnessed the river and powered mills throughout the city. 
James B. Francis, arguably the finest engineer in 19th-century America, played a key role in the history of Lowell’s urban industrial development. An English immigrant who came to work for Lowell’s Proprietors of Locks and Canals as a young man, Francis rose to become both the company’s chief engineer and its managing executive. Linking Francis’s life and career with the larger story of waterpower in Lowell, Malone offers the only complete history of the design, construction, and operation of the Lowell canal system.

The Indians of southern New England understood the military importance of technology long before their first meeting with a white man. Their crafts and modes of limited warfare were well suited for their environment and culture. But the arrival of Europeans, with advanced weapons and a ruthless concept of total war, soon changed the Indian way of life and raised the costs of armed conflict. This book looks at combat in the 17th century and shows how Indians honed their skills, creatively adapting European military technology to fit their own needs. The Native Americans' proficiency in forest warfare, coupled with their rapid acquisition and mastery of firearms, took the colonists by surprise. Indians not only showed superior marksmanship and tactics, but also learned to repair muskets, make gunflints and cast bullets. Trained from childhood to hunt with bows and to aim at individuals in combat, Indians took advantage of the flintlock's accuracy. Their response to the massed volleys of European military formations was deadly, accurate fire from well-concealed positions. During the brutal and destructive King Philip's War of 1675-77, Indians armed with flintlocks, fire arrows and steel-edged hatchets proved to be fearsome adversaries, adept in the use of stealth, surprise and mobility. This "skulking way of war" shook the confidence of the colonists and forced them to adopt new tactics for forest warfare - tactics that would be refined and developed in later colonial wars as well as in the American Revolution.
