Nichtlineare Phiinomene und die aus Nichtlinearitiiten resultierenden Moglichkeiten und Formen der Strukturbildung, der Selbstorganisation und kooperativen Effekte sind in den letzen 20 - 30 Jahren verstarkt in den Blickpunkt der wissenschaftlichen Analyse geriickt. Die Resultate dieser Analyse sind vielfaltig, zum Teil ungewohnt und beeinflussen praktisch alle Wissensbereiche in einem MaBe, daB sie dariiber hinaus in der breiten Offentlichkeit auf zunehmendes Interesse stoBen. Als einige Stichworter in diesem Zusammenhang seien solche Begriffe wie dissipative Strukturen, Synergetik, Bifurkationstheorie, Chaos in de­ terministischen Systemen, Fraktale, Spingliiser und Mustererkennung zellulare Automaten genannt. Bei der Analyse hat sich weiter herausgestellt, daB zum Teil unabhiingig von den Spezifika der untersuchten Systeme - ob in der Physik, Che­ mie, Biologie oder auch im Bereich der Soziologie - bei Existenz be­ stimmter Bedingungen qualitativ gleichartige Phiinomene zu beobach­ ten sind. Dies gibt die Moglichkeit, ausgehend von relativ einfachen Modellsystemen allgemeine Verhaltensweisen nichtlinearer Systeme zu studieren. Die Resultate konnen dann zumindest als Denkmoglichkei­ ten zur Untersuchung komplexer Systeme herangezogen werden und die bisher weitgehend an Verhaltensweisen linearer Systeme geschulte Intuition erweitern.
