Gerard Mace's work challenges the barriers between poetry and the essay. This play between and within genres is essential to his writing-which has been called essai merveilleux-and derives from a questioning of language in its broadest sense. He is equally interested in the seductive musicality of words and in the remembered gestures that traced the hieroglyphs of Egypt and the calligraphic writing of the Far East. His fascination with dictionaries, grammars, and glossaries leads him off on journeys in which the real and the imaginary are fused, but without being confused. He slips between words like a marveling child. This edition brings together three series of prose poems from the 70s and early 80s.

L'uvre de Pentti Sammallahti est une sorte d'odyssée de l'espace. Qui ne doit rien à Kubrick. La terre vue par lui, à hauteur d'homme ou d'oiseau, est blanche comme neige, pure comme elle. Curieusement peuplée d'animaux familiers qui tracent leur chemin dans la solitude d'un lieu indéterminé. Un lieu d'autant moins fini que ses panoramiques ne découpent pas un espace, ils indiquent plutôt une continuité latérale, un glissement vers un ailleurs, qu'il soit de glace ou de brume. Finlandais, Pentti Sammallahti est homme du Nord. Il ne supporte ni le soleil ni la chaleur mais il est en connivence parfaite avec une nature dont il est le prédateur fasciné et dont il sublime l'austérité.
