From Content:  "That what is called the history of the Kings and early Consuls of Rome is to  a great extent fabulous, few scholars have, since the time of Beaufort, ventured  to deny. It is certain that, more than three hundred and sixty years after the  date ordinarily assigned for the foundation of the city, the public records  were, with scarcely an exception, destroyed by the Gauls. It is certain that the  oldest annals of the commonwealth were compiled more than a century and a half  after this destruction of the records. It is certain, therefore, that the great  Latin writers of the Augustan age did not possess those materials, without which  a trustworthy account of the infancy of the republic could not possibly be  framed. Those writers own, indeed, that the chronicles to which they had access  were filled with battles that were never fought, and Consuls that were never  inaugurated; and we have abundant proof that, in these chronicles, events of the  greatest importance, such as the issue of the war with Porsena and the issue of  the war with Brennus, were grossly misrepresented. Under these circumstances a  wise man will look with great suspicion on the legend which has come down to us.  He will perhaps be inclined to regard the princes who are said to have founded  the civil and religious institutions of Rome, the sons of Mars, and the husband  of Egeria, as mere mythological personages, of the same class with Perseus and  Ixion. As he draws nearer to the confines of authentic history, he will become  less and less hard of belief. He will admit that the most important parts of the  narrative have some foundation in truth. But he will distrust almost all the  details, not only because they seldom rest on any solid evidence, but also  because he will constantly detect in them, even when they are within the limits  of physical possibility, that peculiar character, more easily understood than  defined, which distinguishes the creations of the imagination from the realities  of the world in which we live."

Now in the public domain, Latin for Beginners, by Benjamin L. D'ooge, Ph.D. was originally published in 1909. The Centurion Edition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the publication of the Latin classic. The text has been retypeset and formatted. All the original illustrations and plates have been included (in black and white). While great effort has been made to remain faithful to the original published work, some formatting changes were necessary. Special vocabularies have been moved from the appendix and placed with their respective lessons. Exercises have been reformatted from paragraphs into numbered lists. Some of the irregular verb forms are now located in the lesson material in addition to the appendix. A new index has been generated. As a bonus, included after the reading material, is the ballad of Horatius from The Lays of Rome by Thomas Babbington Macaulay. As this was a classroom text, no answer key was (or is) included with the book.

The Lays of Ancient Rome consists of four narrative poems invoking historic episodes from Roman legends that were strongly moral in tone, exemplifying Roman virtue against Latine betrayal. They are a delightful literary adventure which allow the reader to enjoy a high point in European culture while learning some incredible details of Roman history. The first two poems describe famous conflicts which led to the creation of the Republic: the story of Horatio's defense of the bridge over the Tiber, and the Battle of Lake Regillus. The third lay tells the story of the Plebeian uprising against their near-slave conditions, and the fourth tells of the Pyrrhic and Punic Wars. These masterpieces were so highly regarded that they were required reading in British public schools for more than a hundred years-until they were replaced by the "accessible" anti-European curricula.

Four of these recount heroic episodes from early Roman history with strong dramatic and tragic themes, giving the collection its name. Macaulay also included two poems inspired by recent history: Ivry (1824) and The Armada (1832).The first poem, Horatius, describes how Publius Horatius and two companions, Spurius Lartius and Titus Herminius, held the Sublician bridge against the Etruscan army of Lars Porsena, King of Clusium. The three heroes are willing to die in order to prevent the enemy from crossing the bridge, and sacking an otherwise ill-defended Rome. While the trio close with the front ranks of the Etruscans, the Romans hurriedly work to demolish the bridge, leaving their enemies on the wrong side of the swollen Tiber.This poem celebrates the Roman victory over the Latin League, at the Battle of Lake Regillus. Several years after the retreat of Porsena, Rome was threatened by a Latin army led by the deposed Roman king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, together with his son, Titus Tarquinius, and his son-in-law, Octavius Mamilius, prince of Tusculum. Lays of Ancient Rome is collection of ballads about heroic episodes in Roman history written by Thomas Babington Macaulay, becoming immensely popular in Victorian times, and were a popular subject for recitation, a common pastime of the era. It was set reading in British public schools for more than a hundred years. The Roman ballads are preceded by brief introductions, discussing the legends from a scholarly perspective. Macaulay explains that his intention was to write poems resembling those that might have been sung in ancient times. Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800–1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer; his books on British history have been hailed as literary masterpieces. Virginia, describes the tragedy of Virginia, the only daughter of Virginius, a poor Roman farmer. The wicked Appius Claudius, a member of one of Rome's most noble patrician families, and head of the college of decemvirs, desires the beautiful and virtuous Virginia. He initiates legal proceedings, claiming Virginia as his "runaway slave", knowing that his claim will be endorsed by the corrupt magistracy over which he and his cronies preside. Driven to despair, Virginius resolves to save his daughter from Claudius' lust by any means—even her death is preferable. The Prophecy of Capys, When Romulus and Remus arrive in triumph at the house of their grandfather, Capys, the blind old man enters a prophetic trance. He foretells the future greatness of Romulus' descendants, and their ultimate victory over their enemies in the Pyhrric and Punic wars.
