Occupation and Society: The East Anglian Fishermen 1880-1914

This book is a study of the effect of occupation on industrial behaviour and how occupation affects social, community and family life. The fishing industry was one of the last to experience the Industrial Revolution. In East Anglia, steam propulsion was introduced within the working life of the oldest of those interviewed for this book, and a number of radical changes in working practices, capital cost and technical development were concentrated into the brief period 1880-1914. As these changes occurred with different timing and force in the two major sectors of the industry - trawling and drifting - East Anglia is an ideal location in which to consider the effect of the forces and relations of production: the fishermen's industrial, social and political attitudes are related to their specific work experience.

Drawing on more than 150 life story interviews with men and women from Scottish and English fishing communities, the book also bases itself on hitherto unused private and public records. A really well done title in the publisher's History Workshop series.

<p>Captain Wallis discovered Tahiti in 1767 when plans were being made in London to send a scientific expedition to the pacific. His reports of the island were so favourable that Tahiti soon became a favoured place for artists and scientists, as well as a source for provisions and recreation for European ships. While the sailors enjoyed the leisurely, sexually-permissive life, European civilisation as a whole was shocked by this and by the Tahitian's paganism. The London Missionary Society was founded to convert them and the contest between British Protestant and French Catholic missionaries led to the eventual expulsion of the British, war between the Tahitians and the French and the final colonisation of the island by France. In Hawaii, a similar story unfolded. Discovered by Captain Cook in 1776, it was a larger centre of trade and commerce than Tahiti and its ultimate fate was a matter of greater international importance, involving Britain, America, France and Russia. Pacific Paradises is a rich and stirring story of cultures in collision. The reality of the colonisation of Tahiti and Hawaii by western powers is a shameful catalogue of misunderstanding and betrayal. In a final irony, western society now embraces many of the qualities held by the 'noble savages.'</p>

Pitcairn Island was a tiny uninhabited Eden when, in January 1790, Fletcher Christian and eight sailors, together with six Polynesian men, twelve Tahitian women and one baby, landed from HMS Bounty. There they burned their boat, thus eliminating any chance of a voluntary return to the known world. Their disappearance was to remain a mystery for twenty years. This book discusses the purposes of the Bounty’s voyage, the mutiny and its consequences, but goes further than any previous publications, to relate the gripping drama of subsequent events on Pitcairn - of the fifteen men who landed on the island, only one was alive when they were discovered, twelve had been brutally murdered by their companions and one had commited suicide. The role of the women in shaping events on the island, and their input into the unique identity of the community, is fully considered for the first time. Their support for the men as rival groups-Tahitians or Europeans-or their concern for individuals largely decided which men lived and died, while the women themselves commited some of the murders. Conflicts over property, race and gender brought this group close to total destruction. But out of the clashes of cultures and individual wills between European mutineers and Pacific islanders came, in a brief space of time, the new community of ’Pitcairn Islanders’: a thriving society based on progressive laws relating to sexual equality and the environment, with significant resonances for the reader some two centuries later.
