The substance of the following three essays was originally contributed, in the form of independent articles to the Manchester Guardian, the Spectator, and the Daily Telegraph respectively. They have been carefully revised, much amplified, and largely rewritten in order to make a connected argument and avoid repetition. Footnotes of authorities have been added. I confess to a feeling of shame at having to write this pamphlet at all. That reputable newspapers in this country should be seeking to transplant here the seeds of Prussian anti-Semitism, and that they should employ for this purpose devices so questionable and a literature so melodramatically silly, cannot but cause a sense of humiliation to any self-respecting Englishman. It is for this reason that I have strictly limited myself to an examination of the specific charges formulated by these publications. I cannot bring myself to believe that it is necessary to deal with them on a larger scale.

AVANT-PROPOSCe tome quatrième des oeuvres complètes de Lucien contient quatre dialogues, édités selon l''ordre du cod. Vatic. gr. 90. Ils appartiennent à la maturité de l''auteur et ont été écrits vers sa quarantaine, à Athènes, avant et après la guerre parthique.Le Charon est un dialogue philosophique où la fantaisie poétique et historique tient une place importante. Les trois autres, plus polémiques, sont liés aux querelles intellectuelles d''Athènes. Les vies des philosophes à l''encan sont une satire directe et quelque peu caricaturale des écoles philosophiques. Le Pêcheur ou les ressuscités, qui est couplé avec le dialogue précédent, offre un plaidoyer de Lucien expliquant que sa critique ne vise pas les grands philosophes du passé (les « ressuscités »), mais seulement ses contemporains ; il ridiculise ceux-ci en imaginant une scène de pêche du haut de l''Acropole pour les attirer avec un hameçon d''or. La Double accusation est un texte fondamental pour comprendre la carrière de Lucien : accusé de trahison dans le cadre d''un procès par la Rhétorique et par le Dialogue (philosophique), il présente sa défense et fait le point sur son oeuvre.

One of the most interesting aspects of thermogenesis research is that it quite naturally attracts workers from an extremely wide spectrum of interests, ranging from the mechanism of cellular respiratory control at the molecular level and neuro-hormonal control of energy dissipation both at the cellular level and that of the whole organisms to the mechanism of temperature control during the hibernating cycle and that of cold acclimatation. Thus, the Satellite Symposium on "The Effectors of Thermogenesis" brought together not only physiologists, but also biochemists, pharmacologists, zoologists and clinicians, and provided a forum for the airing of new ideas as well as for the confrontation of different points of view. These are now reproduced in this book in exactly the same form and order in which they were presented at the Symposium, in the hope of providing a bird's-eye view of the various facets of thermogenesis research. A "mini-review", summarizing the current knowledge in each domain, therefore precedes the corresponding papers. The editors are deeply indebted to the contributors of these introductory lectures for so competently selecting from the mass of available information in each field, only the most essential elements.
