The book is a collection of essays and images that inspired Zoe Beloffs video installation, The Somnambulists 2008. Comprised of five miniature wooden theaters into which moving images are projected, her work centers on the idea of staging the unconscious . Each theater presents a hysterical drama. These include History of a Fixed Idea and A Modern Case of Possession in which two patients of the famous French psycho-pathologist Pierre Janet, express their delusions in song. Other theaters present the ghostly specters of actual hysterics filmed by doctors a hundred years ago. The texts and images included in the book illuminate the complex interweaving of ideas from psychology, writing, performance, art, and moving-image technology at the end of the 19th century. It begins with an introduction to the Players; brief biographies of the scholars, artists, and performers who appear in this volume. The texts include Pierre Janets case study of the writer Raymond Roussel, the Surrealists celebration of hysteria as the greatest poetical invention of the 19th century in The Fiftieth Anniversary of Hysteria and the pioneering psychic researcher Frederic W.H. Myers commentary on Janets contribution to the discovery of the unconscious. Also included are rarely seen photographs by Albert von Schrenck Notzing of artistic production under the influence of hypnosis including images of the celebrated dream dancer Magdelaine G. Included with the book is a DVD-ROM in which Beloffs installation can be viewed as an interactive work for Mac and PC.

Paris Peasant (1926) is one of the central works of Surrealism, yet Exact Change's edition is the first US publication of Simon Watson Taylor's authoritative translation, completed after consultations with the author. Unconventional in form―Aragon consciously avoided recognizable narration or character development―Paris Peasant is, in the author's words, “a mythology of the modern.” The book uses the city of Paris as a stage or framework, and Aragon interweaves his text with images of related ephemera: café menus, maps, inscriptions on monuments and newspaper clippings. A detailed description of a Parisian arcade (nineteenth-century precursor to the mini-mall) and another of the Buttes-Chaumont park, are among the great set pieces within Aragon's swirling prose of philosophy, dream and satire. André Breton wrote of this work: “no one could have been a more astute detector of the unwonted in all its forms; no one else could have been carried away by such intoxicating reveries about a sort of secret life of the city....”

This is the first paperback edition in English of one of the most important and entertaining works of Surrealist fiction. Aragon’s 1922 novel boldly appropriates the title and plot of a didactic seventeenth-century epic, recounting the adventures of Odysseus’ son Telemachus; but the moralistic underpinnings of the original are replaced by a Surrealist’s dedication to the strange, the beautiful and the erotic. Though a classic of Surrealism, this is not automatic writing; on the contrary, it is a wryly self-conscious book, full of the kinds of intertextual games associated with writers such as Borges and Calvino. As the Huberts comment in their Introduction, “Aragon did not have to liberate his mind through automatic exercises; but by mastering and playing with the narrative… he succeeded in freeing himself from the constraints of mimeticism… descend[ing] into the diabolical nirvana of Dada.”

Aragon ne ressemble pas à l'image que l'on a de lui, celle d'un poète qui, après avoir pris part à l'aventure surréaliste, a recouru à la rime et à des formes traditionnelles pour chanter la France résistante, le parti communiste et l'amour d'Elsa. Sa voix propre est sans doute moins célèbre que celles que lui ont prêtées les chanteurs. Il arrive en effet qu'on ne voie en lui qu'un parolier de génie, surtout quand on néglige de «commencer par le lire». Sa poésie, il est vrai, n'est pas un rébus ; elle demeure une parole intelligible, ce qui la rend accessible, ce qui permet aussi à ses non-lecteurs de se méprendre à son propos. Aragon, à qui le lit, apparaît comme le poète du mouvement perpétuel. Inventeur de formes et de mètres nouveaux, il ne s'en tint jamais à ses découvertes, continua de se renouveler, contesta les genres anciens sans les refuser : en les utilisant. Comme Hugo (vu par Mallarmé), «il était le vers français personnellement». Comme Hugo encore, il eut plusieurs cordes à son instrument et n'en négligea aucune. Voici donc toute la lyre d'Aragon, rassemblée, ainsi qu'il l'a souhaité, dans l'ordre chronologique, depuis Feu de joie jusqu'aux Adieux en passant par des traductions et des textes épars dont cette édition offre le recueil le plus complet jamais réalisé. On a pris l'habitude de distinguer trois périodes dans ces soixante années de création : l'appel à l'imaginaire des époques dadaïste et surréaliste, la quête de la réalité à travers les noces de l'écriture et du militantisme (dont la poésie de la Résistance est la plus belle illustration), le lyrisme intime, enfin, qui offre une incessante relecture de soi via une diversité inouïe de formes. Ces deux volumes montrent qu'Aragon, en fait, ne changea jamais tout à fait de matière, que tous les enjeux de sa poésie la langue, l'Histoire, le sujet individuel sont toujours présents, même si l'accent est mis tantôt sur l'un, tantôt sur l'autre. Son uvre poétique a l'unité, labyrinthique certes, mais incontestable, d'un océan. On en a beaucoup fréquenté les plages ; on peut désormais l'explorer jusque dans les grandes profondeurs.
