Sean Scully’s move from London to New York City in 1975 marked a stylistic breakthrough to a period in which he became more engaged with the textures of the metropolis that surrounded him. Culled from two distinct series, the Change and Horizontals drawings--executed in London and New York respectively--highlight the primacy of color and form in Scully’s abstractions. Impressions of each city are fundamental to these drawings, as location plays a key role in the artist’s oeuvre; as the artist stated in 2006, “People tend to think of abstraction as abstract. But nothing is abstract: it’s a self-portrait. A portrait of one’s condition.” This publication accompanies an exhibition organized by The Drawing Center. The works, reproduced as full-color plates, are comprised of acrylic, ink, graphite and masking-tape drawings from 1974–75, as well as two large-scale paintings from the same period and the artist’s notebooks.

<p>This publication explores 400 years of portrait drawings from live models. Forty-four portraits have been chosen from the collection of Paris' École des Beaux-Arts based on criteria such as the social class and profession of the model, male and female gestures, caricature and frontal gaze. The goal of this project is to explore the notion of drawn portraiture and to provide alternative readings of this genre of art-making within a contemporary context. The selection of works is extensive, ranging from never-before-exhibited drawings by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Jacques-Louis David and Charles Garnier, to the work of modern and contemporary masters Henri Matisse and Georg Baselitz, to portraits by recent graduates of the École des Beaux-Arts.</p>

<p>The work of Daniel Brush (born 1947) does not fit neatly into the categories commonly used to describe contemporary art or craft. While he uses traditional art media such as pen and ink and paper or canvas, he also uses materials such as blocks of billet steel, pure aluminum, pure gold and precious gems; he also makes exquisite jewelry. These mysterious artworks--drawings, paintings, small sculptures, jewelry and other objects hard to classify--reveal, upon close inspection, details that are astonishing in their precision and technical facility. Most of Brush's work is in private collections around the world, and it is rarely seen in public. Containing more than 450 photographs (all of which represent the artworks at their actual size), this book shows much of the artist's work of the last decade and affords a rare opportunity to contemplate these objects.</p>
