This volume, featuring over 350 photographs, is the largest book yet to document his life and work. Lesley Leslie-Spinks succeeds like no other photographer in interpreting the movement, the expression and the drama of Eks choreography. Her unique material traces his artistic development from the first choreographies through over forty different works, ending with Bye, a solo for Sylvie Guillem. Margareta Srensons text, with private photos from the Ek family album, provides a close-up picture of Mats Eks life and artistry and valuable keys to the understanding of his work. The book is bilingual, with texts in Swedish and English, and contains a DVD of Old and Door, a work Mats Ek choreographed specially for his mother, choreographer and dancer Birgit Cullberg, who was at the time 83 years old. This unique film, a dance-poem dealing with aging, with a lifetime of dreams and the memories of love, has never before been seen by a large audience. The dreamlike erotic sequences were deemed too provocative when the work was created in 1991 and therefore was never broadcast as planned on Swedish television.
