Originally published in Russian in 1840 Lermontov's "A Hero of Our Time" greatly influenced the later works of other great Russian authors such as Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy. "A Hero of Our Time" is a pioneering work in the genre of the anti-hero novel. The novel's narrative is the story of Pechorin a young nihilistic officer in the army who's story is told in five non-chronological parts.

Smith's EN FACE English translations preserve the form & music as well as the meaning of the Russian originals. More particularly, this collection captures the beauty & power of Mikhail Lermontov, whom many consider second only to Alexander Pushkin among Russian poets. Here, concrete examples of Lermontov's immense influence on subsequent distinguished poets are shown, particularly in Nekrasov's & Sologub's satirical limitations of Lermontov's "Cossack Lullaby." The contents also underscore other derivative forces in literature. Several short lyrics, one by Lermontov, the other by Pushkin, are themselves verse translations (respectively from German & Czech). One may question the inclusion of Maxim Gorky among the stellar poetic talents. However, Gorky displays satirical genius in "The Smertyashkin Poems," his incisive lampoon of Fedor Sologub. Also to the collection's credit are especially fine pieces (& translations!) of Fedor Tiutchev, Zinaida Hippius, & Alexander Blok.</p>
