This is the first major biography of Rose Pesotta, the organizer and vice president of the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) from 1933 to 1944. After moving to the United States from the Ukraine in 1913, Pesotta became involved in the resurgence of the garment workers’ industry, women’s labor colleges, and labor activism. While working for the union, she confronted serious opposition as a woman and an anarchist within an all-male bureaucracy. This book chronicles Pesotta’s life while exploring a number of personal political themes. The author examines Pesotta’s relationships and friendships as they reflect the issues of gender, power, and sexuality, paying particular attention to her relationships with Sacco and Vanzetti and with Emma Goldman. In the course of this biography, Leeder portrays the inherent conflicts between anarchism and bureaucratic organization and between female consciousness and male-dominated institutions. The book explores the potential for pragmatic activism by social visionaries and offers clear contextual frameworks within which to compare and contrast Pesotta to others in similar historical roles.

My Life With Lifers Lessons For A Teacher: Humanity Has No Bars "I have always been drawn to darkness," Elaine Leeder writes. "I know I always championed the underdog." As a sociology professor at Ithaca College in the 1990s, she began teaching at Elmira Correctional Facility in upstate New York. When she moved to California, that same desire to help led her to the prison education program at San Quentin. Then, inspired by her lessons, a group of Leeder's students approached her about working with a program the prisoners had established to aid in their long and difficult process of redemption and transformation. She accepted. These members of New Leaf on Life-the San Quentin "lifers"-have been sentenced to terms ranging from fifteen years to life in prison. Unlike Death Row inmates, who will either die in prison or be executed, many of the lifers are eligible for parole after having spent twenty to thirty years behind bars. But too often, they never see that opportunity because of the popular view that they are all "hardened criminals," killers incapable of rehabilitation and unfit to be free. What Leeder has learned, however, is that incarceration does not dictate character. Her students, although they are convicts, are committed to making their time in jail a life sentence in the best sense, not a death sentence. They have gone the extra mile to come to terms with their crimes, and have often managed to redeem their lives. My Life With Lifers shares the journey of a woman "on the outside" as she discovered the true nature of life in prison, and the roadblocks-so many of them unneeded-on the inmates' path to freedom. What Leeder's experiences add up to is both a fascinating human story and a reasoned and impassioned case for prison reform.

Students are provided with a theoretical understanding on families and information on how gender relations, race, ethnicity, class, and other structural conditions affect the family. The text addresses love, marriage, the end of relationships, intergenerational relations, refugees, immigrants, families of prisoners, violence, and domestic violence globally. The final chapter explores the impact of globalization and the future of the family, particularly as it relates to the impact of technology, religion, and social policies on family life The Family in Global Perspective effectively demonstrates how families around the world are impacted by social, economic, and political change. It is ideal for courses in family studies, sociology, global studies, cultural studies, social work, and counseling.
Elaine Leeder is Professor Emerita of Sociology and Dean Emerita of Social Sciences at Sonoma State University. Previously she taught at Ithaca College in Ithaca New York. She earned her doctoral degree from Cornell University, a masters in public health from the University of California at Berkeley, and a masters in social work from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York. Dr. Leeder has experience as an educator, professional psychotherapist, consultant, and trainer of mental health and criminal justice professionals. She has won numerous awards for her community work, including one from the American Red Cross for her work on restorative justice in prisons. She was a visiting scholar at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. She is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who of American Teachers, and Who’s Who of American Women.
