General Idea was founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal and AA Bronson as a generic identity to free the artists “from the tyranny of individual genius.” Under the leadership of their fictitious muse Miss General Idea, and inspired by William Burroughs' conception of the “image virus,” the collective interrogated media image culture through now legendary projects like File magazine, as well as paintings, installations, sculptures, mail art, photographs, videos, ephemera, TV programs and even a beauty pageant. General Idea came to an end in 1994, when Partz and Zontal died of AIDS. Today General Idea can be seen to anticipate the later art collectives of the 1970s as well as aspects of Relational Aesthetics in the 1990s. This volume presents an overview of the Canadian collective's bold mingling of reality and fiction and their frequently transgressive, parodic incursions upon both art and society. It traces such prevalent themes of their oeuvre as the mystique of the artist and the creative process, glamour as a creative tool, art's relationship to media and mass culture, architecture and archaeology, sexuality and AIDS. Including newly commissioned essays and reprinted texts, this volume is richly illustrated with documents and reproductions of the most significant projects realized by General Idea between 1969 and 1994.

Photographer Zoe Leonard practices a type of cerebral roaming combined with carefully considered observation. For more than 20 years she has crisscrossed nature and culture, cityscapes and museums, always searching for signs that say something about structures, about natural and cultural conditions and the contradictions, parallels and connections between them. Leonard's photographs of anatomical wax figures, fashion shows, trees and fences present figures in sparse black-and-white images that open up visual fields of thought and reveal within them our visible world--the concrete and established structures that make up our reality. Leonard first created an international stir at the Documenta 9 exhibition in Kassel, Germany, in 1992, when she placed black-and-white photographs of female genitalia in the context of a male-dominated museum. Since then, the political aspects of her work have formed a backdrop for her constant struggle with shape, imagery and the union of symbols and content. This is the first book to showcase Leonard's complete oeuvre.

Well known for her sober sculptures and photographic meditations, Roni Horn (born 1955) has spent the last 30 years developing a body of work that explores the complex relationship between the viewer and the visual experience. The artist frequently installs a single piece on opposing walls or in adjoining rooms, or conversely mounts a series of closely related images in succession, as a vehicle for investigating the issues of doubling and identical experience that inform her overall practice. This volume is published for Horn's second exhibition at Kukje Gallery in Seoul and presents over 15 works ranging from photographic installations to sculptures and drawings. It includes her most recent series such as Portrait of an Image (with Isabelle Huppert) and Through 6, plus installation shots from important exhibitions throughout the world.
