The Student Activities Manual has been comprehensively revised, with increased numbers of student practice activities and much greater ease of grading. Each Paso is now comprised of 5 to 7 activities specifically correlated to the vocabulary and grammar sections, in easy-to-check formats, along with 1 or 2 activities of more open-ended, personalized design. The Vamos a leer sections have been extensively rewritten, with updated strategies and numerous new readings. About the Author Patti J. Marinelli has had a distinguished career teaching Spanish at the University of South Carolina. The recipient of many university awards, she also was named Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Foreign Language Teachers' Association in 2008. She has extensive experience coordinating the introductory Spanish program and mentoring graduate teaching assistants at the university. Marinelli has authored two other Spanish textbooks, including the best-selling high beginner textbook Puentes. Both her teaching and writing are informed by her experiences as a certified ACTFL OPI tester and her expertise in standards-based instruction.Lizette Mujica Laughlin, a native of Cuba, is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she has been on the faculty for more than 20 years. She is an ACTFL-certified oral and writing proficiency tester/trainer in Spanish/English. Her proficiency training has played a pivotal role in her professional development, for example, as upper-level course coordinator at the University of South Carolina, author, and tester/trainer for ACTFL.

The video to accompany PUENTES, Fifth Edition, includes two segments for each chapter, "En la Hacienda Vista Alegre" and NEW "Imagenes de…," a video visit to the country featured in each chapter's "Panorama cultural" section. The "En la Hacienda Vista Alegre" footage follows the lives of five strangers brought together to live and learn in a Spanish-speaking culture and is featured in the "Vamos a ver!" section of the textbook. The NEW country footage in the "Imagenes de…" part of the "Panorama cultural" section of the text presents travelogue-style clips from featured Spanish-speaking countries.
