Cereals and pasture grasses are economically the most important agricultural plants in the world.  Rice, wheat, millet and rye form the basis of the daily diet of many millions of people; maize, barley and other cereals are used widely for livestock production, and a whole host of pasture grasses in many different climates is grazed by animals to provide us with meat, milk, butter, hides and wool. "All flesh is grass." No wonder that scientists have studied this essential group of plants intensively.  Cereals have been investigated for many years, but systematic research on pasture grasses is of more recent origin. Much is know, more remains to be discovered.  This book attempts to summarize our present knowledge. It deals with the basic growth pattern of the grass plant, how it flowers and produces seed, the ways in which it is affected by environment and adapted to climatic conditions, and how through a better understanding of physiological principles we can improve production from pasture grasses and cereals.
