La única manera de entender algunas cosas es ponerlas por escrito. Quizá al final no se consiga desentrañar por completo el misterio, pero sí iluminar las zonas de sombra a su alrededor. Eso es lo que se ha propuesto y logrado Philippe Lançon en este libro memorable, mezcla de crónica, memoir y gran literatura. Con una prosa llana y un estilo depuradísimo, Lançon nos ofrece en El colgajo un vastísimo retrato de su vida –de París, de Francia, del mundo– después de haber sobrevivido al terrible atentado de Charlie Hebdo del 7 de enero de 2015. Ese retrato, que es necesariamente una reconstrucción, corre paralelo a otras reconstrucciones: la de su mandíbula –destrozada por una bala– y la de su nueva vida después de aquella mañana. Sin rehuir la crueldad del acontecimiento, se detiene en los hechos cotidianos de antes y después del atentado, en la vida hospitalaria y la larga reconfiguración de una nueva identidad. El ingreso modifica su vida y la vida de las personas de su entorno; modifica sus sentimientos, sus recuerdos, su manera de leer, de escribir y hasta de respirar. El miedo, la dependencia y la culpa se apoderan del narrador, que busca señales sin cesar cuando las referencias se pierden de continuo. 
Por estas páginas desfilan amigos, familiares, parejas y compañeros de trabajo que conocieron al viejo Lançon y que contribuirán a que nazca el nuevo, el otro. Pero sobre todo destacan los miembros del personal sanitario, esos ángeles que le darán al autor un nuevo rostro y cuya presencia, como la de la literatura (Shakespeare, Kafka, Proust) y la de la música (Bach, Bill Evans), va punteando todo el libro y el nacimiento de la nueva existencia. Aclamado por la crítica y el público, este no es un libro oscuro, sino tremendamente luminoso; un libro necesario que nadie querría haber escrito y cuya absorbente lectura abre tantos interrogantes como brechas de esperanza.
