Faced with the expanding volume and increasing complexity of information on the pathogenesis of disease, teachers of pathology are confronted with what at first appears to be a no-win situation: teach only the bare essentials of the discipline and leave aside scientific inquiry, or teach pathology as a biologic science and run the risk of diluting the practical essentials. Choosing solutions to this dilemma involves implicit judgments on what pathology really is and on the intelligence and motivation of medical students. Can they accept some degree of uncertainty and think for themselves? And what about the discipline of pathology, still called morbid anatomy in several parts of the world? While at the birth of modern medicine pathologists were medical scientists (almost the only ones), medical science at that time and for many decades after meant mostly the anatomical description of disease. As the understanding of the biologic basis of disease increased, most notably during the explosive growth of recent decades, pathologists were slow in adapting and incorporating these changes. Pathology was in danger of becoming a diagnostic specialty and losing its historical function as a science dedicated to the study of disease mechanisms.The fourth edition of the Pathologic Basis of Disease presents pathology as both basic medical science and clinical specialty and finds successful answers to the questions posed above. The productivity of sugarcane in Bihar is only 48.2 t ha-1 which is about 72 percent of the national productivity of 68.2 t/ha. Thus there is a big gap between national and state level productivity. In soils of Bihar P fixation ranged between 25-90 percent of the applied phosphorus within 120 days. Phosphorus fixation in soil is strongly correlated with free calcium carbonate and base saturation. Sugarcane crop planted colouration of leaf in early growth stages which is supposed to have definite negative bearing on growth of plants and, finally yield. The availabilities of phosphorus to plant roots is mainly through diffusion which is a temperature dependent process. Sugarcane trash mulching or other such mulching material during winter season raises soil temperature (minimum) and ensure better availability of phosphorus. Trash mulching in case of sugarcane has been reported to improve the soil temperature during winter season.On the above background it was considered pertinent to study “Mulching in relation to phosphorus nutrition in autumn planted sugarcane” in calcareous sandy loam soil of Pusa with three levels of sugarcane trash mulch and four levels of Phosphorus.

In Uttaranchal, tea is grown as a rainfed crop. Being dependant almost wholly on rain, its quantity and distribution are very important for growth and production of tea. In tea plantations of Kausani region of Uttaranchal, year-to-year variations in total rainfall and its distribution are significant. Total annual rainfall of 1061mm, 1354mm and 1401mm was received in 2002, 2003 and 2004, respectively (Fig. 18). During January to March 238mm, 271mm and 47mm of rainfall was received in the same order. During 2004, 82% of rainfall occurred in the months of June-August. Therefore, the rainfall distribution was not even. There was no rainfall in the month of March and total rainfall from April to May was 148mm only. Although, rainfall was highest in 2004, however, there was no rainfall in the month of March. Effect of plucking intervals on nutrient uptake In general, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake was highest in 9 days plucking interval followed by 7 and 5 days plucking intervals (Table 4.1-4.15) in both April and June. Also, uptake of all the nutrients increased in June in comparison to April.
