Entrepreneur, impresario, engineer: Johnny Wilson was all of these, in addition to being one of Hawai'i's most formidable politicians. This is the first biography of John Henry Wilson, whose career spanned the first half of the twentieth century and the wide gulf between Hawaiian monarchy and Hawai'i statehood. Born in 1871, the son of Queen Liliuokalani's marshal, the part-Hawaiian, part-Tahitian, part-Scot, part-Irish road contractor cum music promoter ran for his first political office at age forty-seven, as a reluctant senatorial candidate for the Democratic party - at the time known as "the party of the unwashed." Wilson lost the race but went on to win many others, serving as Democratic national committeeman for three decades and as mayor of Honolulu for fourteen years between 1920 and 1954." "Many facets of Wilson's life dramatize that colorful transition period in Hawai'i's history. As the son of a royal official, Wilson harbored his own ideas about the revolt that overthrew the monarchy. His diaries provide important historical information about early Hawaiian music and dance. The dreams and accomplishments of this early union sympathizer and founder of Hawai'i's Democratic party constitute a unique political history of the territory almost in its entirety. In his familiar, engaging style, veteran newspaper reporter Bob Krauss has recorded the legend of Johnny Wilson.

Grove Farm is a historic agricultural site on Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. Started in 1854 by German immigrant, Hermann A. Widemann. . Shortly thereafter, it was sold to the manager, George Norton Wilcox, and it remained in his family for over 100 years. This book tells the biography of this plantation which has a very colorful history starting with producing sugar for the South during the Civil War through it expansion into other crops to feed the troops during WWII. Wilcox pioneering many new agricultural methods as well as farmhand housing styles. In continuing with its history of "firsts" Grove Farm was the first to build a hollow tile house on Kauai. Grove Farm would break from the traditional system of housings its workers in rented, plantation houses and pioneered a home ownership program. By 1955, 177 plantation employees owned their own homes. The Wilcox estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Hawaii on June 25, 1974 as site 74000722. Its boundary was adjusted to total 81.79 acres (33.10 ha) on December 8, 1978, and site changed to 78003436. The main house is now a private museum with tours by appointment.[7] It is located on Hawaii Route 58, known as Nawiliwili Road.

German immigrant Hermann A. Widemann (1822-1899) in 1854 started one of the first sugar plantations in Hawaii, which was chopped out of a large grove of kukui trees and was therefore called the Grove Farm. During the American Civil War the demand for Hawaii sugar grew, but Widemann supported the Confederate States. After leasing Grove Farm to its manager George Norton Wilcox (1839-1933) in November 1864, Widemann moved to Honolulu to work in the capital as a Supreme Court judge. Wilcox would later buy the plantation, and it remained in the family for over 100 years. George's vision, combined with his education, resulted in his building an irrigation system to bring water from the mountains to the flatter lower elevations where the crops were grown changing his arid farm into a thriving sugar plantation. This idea was later copied by many other planters on the islands.
