Perhaps in one sense, according to the author, Thomas Krampf's new book of poems, The Divine Genome, might just be another stop on a long spiritual and poetic journey. This would have begun a number of years ago with the publication of his first book, Subway Prayer and Other Poems of the Inner City. But in another sense, and following the dictates of a more recent poem, "The Recluse," this book might also reflect a new need for an inner quietude, and the ability to effortlessly abandon one dimension of time, to enter another. And all the while, in this periodic quest, not to depart from some earlier themes of social justice, madness, and our common human penchant for violence. But one thing is sure. In an often very striking poetic and personal language, Thomas Krampf won't provide you with any answers. This is not a comfortable book; there are poems in it such as ""Brain Disease,"" which take the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer as subject matter. And yet in other poems madness is not without its own point of view, and its own touch of humor. In this book, the poet seeks to delineate his relationship to his wife and other women. Not all the poems have a dedication, so it is up to the reader to decide. There are poems, such as the ""Elasticity of Time,"" which while exploring the moment of conception, tend to view the woman more in a traditional idealistic role as a muse. Perhaps due to his own ancestry, the poet's fascination with Oriental women, bordering on an obsession, is obvious. And throughout the book there are moments where the poet shares his grief with a neighbor's daughter, or humorously lends his ear to the time-honored wisdom of a housekeeper. The poet seems deeply inclined to celebrate and honor a successful relation between the sexes, both within the family and out, as one of friendship.
