This publication accompanies an unusual exhibition of miniature painting at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which many traditions of Indian painting from the 16th through to the 19th century are explored. Works have here been integrated to provide an overview of the field. Indian painting is so diverse that the paintings of the Mughal, Deccani, Rajput and Pahari courts are usually treated individually. This work explores the connections between the different traditions caused by changes in patronage, the movement of artists from one area to another and the diffusion of styles.

A great and early civilization arose on the subcontinent of South Asia that in time spread northward to the Himalayan region and eastward to Southeast Asia, a vast area including Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Myanmar. This resource introduces works of art from this area selected from the superb South and Southeast Asian and Islamic collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fifty-three digital images (of which forty are also reproduced as slides) present examples of Buddhist and Hindu temple art and the later court arts of South Asia; these range from miniature painting and luxurious textiles to elegant personal possessions. The boxed package also contains two posters; a summary of South and Southeast Asian history; a section about Buddhism and Hinduism; descriptions of the visual qualities and symbolic meanings of the art; classroom activities; lesson plans; a glossary; and a CD-ROM version. Paintings of extraordinary beauty and variety were made for the many royal courts of India during a golden age that unfolded in the sixteenth century and lasted well into the British period. In India, two artistic traditions converged. The indigenous Rajput culture produced exuberant, vibrantly colored, boldly patterned illustrations of Hindu myths and epics. The entirely different art of the Islamic Mughal invaders, subtle and naturalistic, mainly presented elegant scenes of court life and history. From the cross-fertilization of these two traditions, a multiplicity of highly original painting styles blossomed and flourished. While works of art originating in Mughal and Rajput courts are often treated separately, in this book paintings made in the major Mughal, Deccani, Rajput, and Pahari workshops are presented together, chronologically. Devoted to a period of extraordinary cultural achievement - from the 11th to the mid-15th century - when Tibet became known as the Buddhist holy land - this book accompanies a major touring show opening at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art in October 1998. It includes a collection of exquisite "thankas" (paintings) that incorporated traditions from eastern India, Nepal and China as well as the Tibetans' own Buddhist imagery. Though Tibet was closed to the West until the early-20th century, many thankas have survived in Western collections and these have been brought together on exhibition for the first time. The book also features scholarly essays that provide historical, stylistic and technical information.
