Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes (born 1960) derives the basic motifs for her colorful, seductive paintings from the tropical flora and fauna of her homeland, juxtaposing a native color palette with explicit borrowings from the western canon (Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Sonia Delaunay). In her lively compositions, abstract ornaments, arabesques, flowers and geometrical shapes pile up vertiginously into rhythmic deluges of bright pattern. Milhazes emerged alongside the Geração Oitenta (1980s Generation) movement, which, in tandem with trends in America and Europe, proclaimed a return to painting after the conceptual austerities of the 1970s. Milhazes’ art vividly expresses this new hedonistic approach to the picture plane, which also recalls something of the spirit of the 1960s Tropicalia artists. This publication presents beautiful reproductions of four new monumental paintings that improvise on the theme of the four seasons, as well as new collages and a mobile sculpture.

Over the 60 years of his artistic career, Gerhard Richter (born 1932) has produced a standard-setting oeuvre whose thematic and stylistic diversity has no equal among the art of our time. This extensive monograph is the first to present the complete range of the numerous works Richter realized as series, cycles and spaces. It includes figurative paintings, such as landscapes, still lifes and portraits, many of which are based on photographs, such as the series S. and Child, a personal and intimate variation on the traditional subject of the Madonna and Child. It also features abstract works, for which Richter draws from a changing repertoire of forms and colors to produce both small and monumental paintings.

This volume, published for a retrospective at the Fondation Beyeler, gathers around 50 key paintings from all phases of this legendary artist's career. It commences with the monumental masterpiece Passage du Commerce-Saint-André (1952–54), in which Balthus' intensive study of the dimensions of space and time and their relationship to figure and object is especially apparent.
Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus (1908–2001), was born in Paris to Polish expatriate parents. He was raised in an exceptionally artistic milieu, with visitors to his household including Rilke (who became his mother's lover), André Gide, Jean Cocteau, Maurice Denis and Pierre Bonnard. Balthus was one of the few living artists to be represented in the Louvre, when his painting The Children (1937) was acquired from the private collection of Pablo Picasso.
