The volumes in the series Organometallic Syntheses present clear, safe and reliable procedures for the preparation of important types of organometallic compounds. From Volume 3, the series is being published by Elsevier, and has also undergone some major changes. In light of the burgeoning of organometallic chemistry in the twenty years since the appearance of Volume 1 the editors decided to avail themselves of the rich experience of the organometallic community in the ongoing task of offering reliable preparative procedures. Therefore, with this volume, the series has been transformed from an authored work into an edited work. The editors reviewed the research literature for the last five years and sought to identify those types of organometallic compounds of greatest current interest in research. They then contacted those chemists most experienced with the synthesis and invited them to submit procedures for their synthesis. The proposals received were evaluated by the editors and those of greatest interest were selected for this volume.

Over 160 detailed and tested procedures for the preparation of specific organometallic compounds are given in Volume 4. Part I contains procedures for the synthesis of 76 types of transition metal organometallic compounds, and Part II procedures for the synthesis of 85 nontransition metal organometallic compounds. In both parts, the editors have sought to include procedures that give the safe, reliable synthesis of organometallic compounds that can lay some claim to significance in current chemical research. This significance may be based on various factors such as: (a) the synthesis describes the formation of an unusual or less common structural type; (b) the compound prepared is a useful intermediate in other syntheses; (c) the compound is a model reagent for investigating the mechanisms of various fundamental or industrial processes, such as the Fischer-Tropsch reaction; (d) the compound is a useful reagent in organic synthesis; and (e) the techniques employed in the synthesis of the compound are unusual and worthy of further application, such as metal-atom and electrochemical procedures.

The intense current interest in the development of solar energy as a viable energy alternative comes as no surprise in view of the widespread awareness of impending world-wide energy shortages. After all, the magnitude of energy available from the sun is impressive, its diffuseness and intermittent nature notwithstanding. The fact that, as a source, it represents a constant and inex haustible supply of energy is alluring. The fact that most solar application schemes are nonpolluting in nature is an attractive bonus. In spite of these impressive attributes, research and development in the area of solar energy is in its infancy, owing largely to the prior lack of any need to exploit such diffuse sources. Indeed efforts in this area have traditionally been within the province of solid-state physics and engineering. The problems associated with efficient light harvesting and storage, however, are not simply technological ones. Effec tive solutions to these problems appear to lie beyond the current forefront of the chemical sciences. Consequently input fr9m scientists previously engaged in fundamental chemistry has begun to emerge.
