Paul Henry (1876-1958) is Ireland's greatest twentieth-century landscape painter. Trained in fin de siècle Paris under Whistler, he also absorbed the influences of Post-Impressionism, which linger throughout his work. In his depictions of the landscapes and of the way of life in the west of Ireland in his time, Henry provides the quintessential view of the Irish scene, now as universally familiar as Cézanne's view of Provence or Constable's representations of Suffolk. Recent years have seen considerable growth of interest in the development of Irish art in the early years of the twentieth century. One of the most notable features of the inter-war period in particular was the evolution of what is often referred to as the 'Irish School of Landscape Painting'. Frank McKelvey, along with Paul Henry,J.H. Craig and Charles Lamb, was of the artists who created this school. This book includes a detailed discussion of McKelvey's life and career both as a landscape and a portrait painter and examines his work in the wider context of Irish art in his time. It also includes numerous illustrations of his work as well as lists of his major exhibitions and works in public collections.

Long considered one of the most exciting and influential Irish artists of his generation, Basil Blackshaw celebrates his 70th birthday in 2002. Wishing to mark the occasion, S.B. Kennedy approached him some time ago about the possibility of an exhibition. To his delight, the artist agreed. Struck by the expressive vitality of the new paintings he saw in Blackshaw's studio, Kennedy suggested that, rather than being a retrospective show, the exhibition should contain only recent works. Blackshaw again agreed and enthusiastically set about making pieces especially for the exhibition. The result is a remarkable collection of 38 new paintings in which Blackshaw's assured technique combines with his characteristically fresh, almost childlike vision to create works of wonderful freedom and "joie de vivre". This book reproduces all the paintings in vibrant colour and, together with the exhibition, celebrates an extraordinary achievement.
