Narrative Of My Captivity Among The Sioux Indians

In 1864 the Kelly wagon train, a party of six people, departed Geneva, Kansas bound for Idaho. The party chose to turn down the offer to join a larger group, and instead continued on their way west content in their own company. At the end of one particularly hot day, they were confronted by a band of two hundred and fifty Indians, who began the massacre that would end in the abduction of Fanny Kelly and her daughter Mary. Although she didn't realize it, Fanny Kelly was witness to the last days of the free roaming way of life of the Plains Indian. Her describes her life with them in detail. First published in the nineteenth century, Fanny Kelly tells er story with the accepted hostility toward the Indian that was common in her day, hostility that led to stereotyping and misunderstandings that still exist today.

Kelly passed away in 1904.

Fanny Kelly’s memoir, first published in 1872, is an intelligent and thoughtful narrative. Kelly spent five months as a prisoner of Ogalalla Sioux in 1864 when she was nineteen years old. A woman of her time, there was no reason she should feel sympathy toward her captors, but the introduction points out examples of expressed favor toward the Sioux, however unconscious. This narrative is a valuable part of literature not only for its historical importance but its depiction of the conflicting images of Native Americans in the nineteenth century: savage aggressors or victims of prejudice and oppression.
