"Fluxus" is an enigma. Can it be called an art movement? Or does it defy categorization? Associated with artists such as Joseph Beus and George Brecht," Fluxus" was founded in 1961 by George Maciunas, a New York design student who was involved with the group until his death in 1978. It represented the work of a group of young artists, writers and composers involved in a wide range of mixed-media events including concerts, performances, exhibitions and other "gatherings". The group is associated with a form of anti-art encompassing everything from photography and pavemment art to poetry and drama, and is known for its own range of products. This book presents a selection of "Fluxus' memorabilia - posters, sculptures and boxes, puzzles and games - that set out to capture the essence of the group's ideology, as well as photographs of some of the key events that took place, including the exhibitions of Yoko Ono and the performance of Nam June Paik. An introduction focuses on the aims and ambitions of the "chairman" of the group, George Maciunas.

For more than twenty years Japanese-born photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto has photographed and transformed reality in distinctive, carefully composed series of images. Using a large-format camera, he achieves a wide range of tones and effects in a body of work that reflects his fascination with the paradoxes of time, his great love of detail and his incredible technical mastery. Dieter Roth was a multifaceted artist, as Volume 3 in the series of books featuring works from the Dieter Roth Foundation makes abundantly clear. He worked in many media, and Books + Multiples includes over 200 artist's books, forty multiples, jewelry, films, videos, tapes, records, and posters produced over a fifty-year period. Beginning in the 1950s, Dieter Roth took the artist's book in new directions. Starting with op-art and visual poetry books, he then experimented with all aspects of offset printing and by the 1990s was producing "copy books," using photocopiers. His multiples were equally innovative, incorporating materials such as chocolate, sugar, and spices. Dieter Roth began filmmaking in his mid-twenties, and his interest in moving images and sound remained to the end. The jewelry editions shed light on a little known aspect of his early work, while the last section of the book shows all his poster designs. A touring exhibition of Dieter Roth's work will open at the Museum of Modern Art in March 2004. 750 color illustrations.

A biography of this leading member of the Fluxus movement. George Maciunas (1931-1978) established strangely radical modes of presentation in the name of Fluxus. In his view the bulk of the conventional art business--museums, theaters, concert halls, opera houses, and publishers--should cease to exist. Traditional works of art were to be replaced by Fluxus. Art was to be so uncomplicated that it could be realized by anyone, anywhere. New pieces would have their copyrights protected and would be available for the price of a paperback. Maciunas was a staunch opponent of personal enrichment and came up with spartan solutions for almost every life situation. Despite his tireless efforts, he never achieved his ultimate goal, and he died impoverished and in miserable circumstances. 100 duotone illustrations.

George Maciunas: The Dream of Fluxus

The coincidental English meaning of the artist's Rhaeto-Romanic (Rumantsch) name, Not Vital, conceals a message: perhaps his work is not allowed to be what it wants to be. Not Vital was born in 1948 at Sent, a village in the Lower Engadine, in the Swiss canton of Grisons. He spent his childhood in that isolated, storm-racked mountain world, close to the Italian and Austrian borders. Vital's father was a timber merchant, who had hand-picked loggers working in the Engadine forests and carried on a brisk trade with the surrounding regions. But he told his three sons at an early age that they would not be able to carry on his business. In 1968 Not Vital moved to Paris to study art, in 1974, he went to New York to concentrate on his work as a sculptor. It was not until 1980 that he first worked in plaster, and his first bronze was cast in 1983. These two materials have predominated in his work ever since.Vital is not showing us actual animals, implements or organs but fragmentary cultural constructs. It is clear that specific memories or friendships have provided the stimuli. Their making seems fuelled by a Surrealistic impulse to concentrate and condense, coupled with a soft-spoken native wit. Vital's art shifts and migrates in a dreamlike way between non-European artifacts and a contemporary form of totemism.

The fear of being born into the world an unwanted girl; the fear of becoming a pawn in the lives of her parents; the fear of failing as a wife, mother and artist: Over the course of her 70 years as an artist, Louise Bourgeois, born in 1911 in Paris, has always placed the psychology of family at the center of her work. Bourgeois left her homeland in 1938, without a degree, to live in New York with her husband, Robert Goldwater, a curator at The Museum of Modern Art. In 1940, the couple adopted their first son, and in 1941 Bourgeois gave birth to two more boys. Her artistic oeuvre deals almost exclusively with the fear of not being able to live up to the roles she was born into and took on. Most of her early works consisted of paintings on the theme of family, many of which have rarely, if ever, been reproduced. When she first began sculpting, she portrayed children and family members as stakes fatefully stuck in the ground, "Personnages," with windows and openings, who occasionally carried small packages, but who seemed mute and paralyzed. Her later work grew more sexualized, and after the death of her husband, she pursued the paternal element intensely. This thematic gathering of 20 paintings, more than 60 drawings, 35 sculptures and 5 embroideries made between 1935 and 2005 is also, by virtue of the centrality of family to her oeuvre, an overarching retrospective, a focused view of her career.
