[From the Author's Preface] I have written this book out of a concern for what seemed to me a disproportionately print-oriented hermeneutic in our study of the Bible. Walter J. Ong, who has amply documented the problem outside the field of biblical studies, has termed it the "chirographic bias" of Western intellectuals, and Lou H. Silberman has, in the words of Marshall McLuhan, drawn critical attention to the "Gutenberg galaxy" in which much of biblical scholarship is conducted. In New Testament studies the problem manifests itself in the inability of form criticism to produce an oral hermeneutic, our misconceived search for "the original" form of oral materials, the collaboration of form with redaction criticism in reconstructing tradition according to the paradigm of linearity, and a prevalent tendency to perceive the written gospel in continuity with oral tradition. The current revival of the Griesbach hypothesis, which seeks to explain the Markan text as a conflation of Matthean and Lukan texts, is further testimony to the triumph of visualism and our growing inability to come to terms with spoken words in the synoptic tradition.

This volume tries to present a non-technical, jargon-free narrative, based on the author's lectures at Rice University, on the not-so-readily apparent mental and spiritual universe of peoples in contemporary Asia, who are caught between their inherited cultural and religious traditions and their current aspirations for economic security as well as political and human freedom. Like it or not, peoples in Asia have been influenced both negatively and positively, by Western thoughts and civilizations, especially in reference to such notions as freedom, human dignity, democracy, etc., during the past four decades or so. Now that the day of Western colonialism is over, peoples in Asia are determined to reconcile some of the legacies of the modern West, which provide «revolutionary impulse», with certain features of their inherited «traditions».

Over the last three decades scholars have rediscovered the religious dimension of the Old South's history. Evangelical Christianity was a central component of the culture of both antebellum whites and blacks. In its formative years evangelical religion stood in critique of the dominant society and opposed slavery, but by the eve of the Civil War evangelical religion was a stalwart defender of that peculiar institution. Religion was essential to the development of southern nationalism, was used to defend secession, and convinced white southerners that victory was certain. Moreover, when defeat came, southerners again turned to religion to explain the course of events. Blacks also found meaning and solace in evangelical Christianity; in the churches they were treated more nearly as equals than anywhere else in southern society.
