The first major English-language monograph on Icelandic Pop artist Erró establishes his primacy among today’s significant figurative artists. Erró, Iceland’s most prominent painter, receives long overdue critical attention for his contributions to international Pop, late Surrealism, and contemporary figurative painting in this sumptuous monograph. Since introducing exclusively source-image-based painted collage to the European Pop movement in 1959, Erró has produced an influential body of work mining cartoons and art history on canvases marked by political satire and his own cheerfully dystopian observations of human nature. Prescient and timely, Erró’s paintings are marked by a voracious consumption of imagery synthesizing a hallucinatory vision of contemporary visual culture. Often compared to Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, and Roy Lichtenstein, Erró’s multifigure narratives, refusal to commit to a singular style, and obsession with cartoons set his practice apart. An essay by Ruba Katrib connects Erró to today’s figurative-painting practices, and a chronology by Danielle Kvaran traces his wild figurations of history and subjects, ranging from Winston Churchill to contemporary music icons. Thinking through early twentieth-century cartoons, the kaleidoscopic drawings of Saul Steinberg, the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and other children's entertainment, Puddle, Pothole, Portal explores the coexistence of disparate elements within shared spaces. Gags betray complex meanings and sociopolitical satire, and unrelated objects, locales and avatars interact in the same dimension. As screens, passageways and shadows populate both physical and virtual realms, we question whether they are reflections or traces of the objective world, obstructions, fantasies or entryways into other realms. How artists have examined the legacies of American-led military engagement in Iraq
The 1991 Gulf War marked the start of a lengthy period of American-led military involvement in Iraq that led to more than a decade of sanctions, the 2003 Iraq War, and ongoing repercussions throughout the region. Though the Iraq War officially ended in 2011, artists have continued to examine these conflicts and their impacts. Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991–2011 charts the effects of these wars on cultural production in Iraq and throughout its diasporas, as well as responses to the wars in the West, revealing how this period was defined by unsettling intersections of spectacularized violence and new imperialisms. The exhibition features more than 80 artists and collectives, including Afifa Aleiby, Dia al-Azzawi, Thuraya al-Baqsami, Paul Chan, Harun Farocki, Guerrilla Girls, Thomas Hirschhorn, Hiwa K, Hanaa Malallah, Monira Al Qadiri, Nuha al-Radi and Ala Younis. This catalog features newly commissioned essays by Zainab Bahrani, Rijin Sahakian, Nada Shabout and McKenzie Wark alongside texts by exhibition co-curators Peter Eleey and Ruba Katrib. Excerpts from period journals by artist Nuha Al-Radi and anonymous blogger Riverbend detail life in Iraq over two decades of war, sanctions and occupation. Reprinted essays from Jean Baudrillard and Serge Daney provide additional context, delving into the effects of the conflict upon media and visual culture.

Four decades of participatory art, films, sculpture and more from the iconic Relational Aesthetics pioneerAccompanying the first US survey and largest exhibition to date dedicated to Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, Rirkrit Tiravanija: A LOT OF PEOPLE traces four decades of Tiravanija's multifaceted practice. Spanning rarely seen early works from the 1980s through recent projects, the publication covers Tiravanija's experimentations with installation, film, works on paper, ephemera, sculpture and participatory works. Designed by Tiffany Malakooti, the publication features over 400 images--many of which are published for the first time--as well as 23 newly commissioned texts. Longform essays by exhibition curators Ruba Katrib and Yasmil Raymond, as well as scholars Jörn Schafaff, David Teh and Mi You, dive into key aspects of Tiravanija's work, providing historical context. These texts are complemented by 18 short reflections from artists, thinkers and collaborators who have been key interlocutors with Tiravanija over the years. Rirkrit Tiravanija (born 1961) is a Thai contemporary artist residing in New York, Berlin and Chiang Mai, Thailand. Recent solo exhibitions include the Hirshhorn Museum (2019); the National Gallery Singapore (2018); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2016); the Kunsthalle Bielefeld (2010); the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2009); the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Serpentine Gallery, London (all 2005); and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2004). Tiravanija has been on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts at Columbia University since 2000. He is the cofounder of the Land Foundation, located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and a member of Bangkok's alternative space and magazine VER.
