While researching in Nantes, a port city enriched by the slave trade, celebrated French novelist Fabienne Kanor came across a chilling report written in 1774 by the commander of a slave ship, Le Soleil. Captain Louis Mosnier recounted the loss of valuable "cargo" when fourteen African women escaped from the ship's hold to leap overboard rather than face enslavement. Half of them drowned or were eaten by sharks. From this tragic incident, Kanor has composed a powerful, polyphonic novel in which each woman tells her own vivid story. Their disparate lives from differing cultures, conditions, and perspectives intersect through their violent mistreatment, profound sense of disorientation, and collective act of resistance. These intertwined narratives reveal the brutalizing effects of slavery, not only on the victim but also on the oppressor: the master can no more escape its dehumanizing effects than can the slave.

Les prix littéraires d'automne - et c'est la gloire des jurés - ont mis en évidence ce qu'un certain milieu confiné avait jusque-là tenté de masquer, à savoir que la littérature française ne se réduisait pas à la contemplation narcissique et desséchante de son propre rétrécissement, mais que d'autres voix, venues d'ailleurs, lui ouvraient les portes du monde, y faisaient souffler les nouvelles du dehors qui sans ces voix ne seraient jamais venues jusqu'à nous. Alain Mabanckou nous avait pourtant prévenus : "Pendant longtemps, ingénu, j'ai rêvé de l'intégration de la littérature francophone dans la littérature française. Avec le temps, je me suis aperçu que je me trompais d'analyse. La littérature francophone est un grand ensemble dont les tentacules enlacent plusieurs continents. La littérature française est une littérature nationale. C'est à elle d'entrer dans ce grand ensemble francophone." Même si à vrai dire personne ne parle le francophone, ni écrit en francophone. La francophonie n'exprime-t-elle pas une nostalgie d'un temps où la France se présentait comme une étoile déversant ses lueurs sur le monde ? C'est d'une constellation que nous parlons. Nous assistons à l'émergence d'une littérature de langue française détachée de la nation avec laquelle elle a entretenu des liens stratégiques, libre désormais de tout pouvoir autre que celui de la poésie et de l'imaginaire, et n'ayant pour frontières que celles de l'esprit.
