"The Gospel Illustrated by Duccio" is a unique creation designed to celebrate one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of the high medieval period while also bringing to life the Gospel story with over fifty images of scenes from the lives of Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.The book includes the complete extant cycle of images of Christ and Mary from the Maesta Altarpiece, which Duccio di Buoninsegna completed in 1311 for the Cathedral of Siena, Italy. The Maesta begins with the Annunciation, Nativity, and other mysteries from the childhood of Christ and continues with scenes from His public ministry, such as the Wedding at Cana, the Healing of the Blind Man, the Transfiguration, the Raising of Lazarus, and many more. It glories in depicting over twenty scenes from the passion of Christ, continues with seven separate resurrection appearances and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, before concluding with six extra-Biblical scenes depicting the final days of the Blessed Virgin Mary's life on earth.Each large, full-color image is paired with the text, most of which are drawn directly from the Canonical Gospels, which tells the story illustrated by the painting.One of the extraordinary features of the book is found in the texts corresponding to the final six paintings, which tell the story of the last days of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These are drawn from the non-canonical text of the Transitus Mariae, dating from the fifth century. Although not the inspired Word of God, these texts do reflect ancient Christian traditions concerning the end of Mary's life on earth. Not as well known now as they were in Duccio's time, their discovery will be a delight for modern readers.

This volume highlights the forty frescos depicting scences from the lives of Jesus and Mary completed by Giotto in 1305 on the walls of the Scrovegni Chapel (also known as the Arena Chapel), in Florence, Italy. The Arena Chapel cycle begins with the story of Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Blessed Virgin, and includes scenes from her childhood before continuing with scenes from the Gospel beginning with the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, and more. From the childhood of Christ to His public ministry; from His passion to His resurrection and ascension; the cycle concludes with an impressive depiction of the Final Judgment which likely served as an inspiration for Dante's Divine Comedy.Each large, full-color image is paired with the text that tells the story illustrated by the painting. For most of the paintings, this is a text drawn directly from the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, or the Apocalypse of Saint John. On the Ordinary and Extraordinary Magisterium: On the Ordinary and Extraordinary Magisterium from Joseph Kleutgen to the Second Vatican Council

This book, which is now in its second edition, expels the confusion surrounding the distinction between the ordinary and the extraordinary magisterium of the Church by exposing the ambiguity inherent in the term 'ordinary magisterium'. A detailed analysis of the origins of this terminology in the writings of Joseph Kleutgen, a nineteenth century neo-scholastic theologian, provides the historical and theological context for understanding its intended sense in the documents of Pope Pius IX and the First Vatican Council. The main lines of historical development are then traced from the end of the First Vatican Council up through the teaching of the Second Vatican Council with special attention given to the question of an ordinary magisterium of the pope and to the extension of the extraordinary magisterium to the secondary object of the magisterium and to the confirmation or re-affirmation of doctrines already infallibly taught by the Church. This latter question has serious implications for the interpretation of doctrinal declarations such as those found in Evangelium vitae, Ordinatio sacerdotalis, and several of the documents of Vatican II. The study concludes by considering the approach to these questions taken by the Second Vatican Council in the constitution on the Church Lumen gentium.
